I think the mental maps were an interesting tool for me to see how much I actually knew about Mauritius and Port Louis. It conveyed my understanding pretty well in the presence of places of significance to me such as Pamplemousses and the airport. However, what I found more interesting was how little I knew about Port Louis and how that was reflected in my inability to describe anything past the few places we visited during our scavenger hunt. Similarly, my Mauritius map, aside from places I associate with ALU (our hike trail, the school itself, Grand Baie), there was very little for me to say. The exercise really revealed to me how much more there is for me to know about the island.

Very similar to my classmates, in my mental map I had focused a lot on the areas that I have been to, and because of this you could obviously see a high concentration of familiarity and knowlege of areas and places in the Northern/Western sides of Mauritius. This being the areas that are cost efficient for me to visit, convenient being close to where I live at ALU, but also comfortable and more familiar with.

Hi classmates! Excited to kickstart this with you!
I haven't gotten to see your maps. My GCU isn't working, hopefully it gets fixed soon and I get to walk around the gallery of your maps

We all seem to agree that our maps pointed out how much of Mauritius we still haven't discovered.

But the thing that stands out to me the most, is how I labelled the places I have been to. For instance, Trous Aux biches, I have drawn a bowl of boiled noodles. There is a food cart that makes the best boiled noodles I have ever tasted on the island by the beach.

So I ask myself, is this all there is to remember about Troux aux biches? definetly not. There has to be much more complex cultural elements to remember about this place. much like one would remember home, one would find it hard to draw a map of their home. Because one knows TOO MUCH about it.

That's how I would like to explore Mauritius. I want to know and blend too much in it that I can't draw the map.

The exercise best elaborated not only places I have been to but also those that stuck with me after my gradual visits. Although my illustration was vague, my mental map managed to capture the monuments that helped me highlight on how I regard the city as one that not only sits on a port but also that which has some history attached to it. The field trip also helped confirm this fact as I observed Port Louis's architecture. However my mental map of Mauritius made me realize how little I know about the Island in general, excluding the ocean( beaches) and sugar canes that currently stand out for me. There's still more to unlearn.

Through the mental map exercise, I realized that I highlighted that the things that were the most significant to me. Looking back at my map, I think the reason why the road from the airport to the ALC campus was the most eye-catching thing was because it was the first place that made me feel like I was home when I landed back in Mauritius a few weeks ago. I think that a lot of our mental maps focused on what we find most important to our lives in Mauritius so far.

I think that there is definitely an extent to which my mental maps conveyed my personal understanding of Port Louis and Mauritius. Like many of us, the places that I hold dearest to my heart (ALC) or those that have had a big impact on my journey here (the airport for instance) are the most prominent elements of my drawings. That is mainly because they were the first places I thought of and therefore the first ones I decided to draw. By the same token, the places I am not familiar with were the least detailed because I honestly had no idea what they looked like (Goodlands, for example, is just represented as a circle on the side of the map). Even with regards to aesthetic, we can clearly see from my map that I have a fair idea of how Port Louis's Caudan mall is constructed and that I thus visit it more than places like the smaller markets around the city. I also tried as best as I could to be geographically correct in my representation (Grand Baie in the North, Casella is the West...) which actually made me smile in surprise because I knew more about the island that I thought.

Then we went for the field trip and i realized that my 100% turned into a 10%. I'm sure once I explore the island of Mauritius 🏝 the same will occur.

Through my mental maps I put down what I thought might have been relevant to me, like landmarks that i knew to help me get around. For example the bus stop🚌, it is the first place I step foot in, and the last thing I see when i'm leaving.

When I was working on my mental maps, one thing I struggled with was that I was constantly doubting that the way I was placing different locations wasn't an accurate representation of how things are in reality and for a long time, I was stuck. I ended up relying on three elements in order to finally come up with something: what I knew, what I had seen and the places where I had made memories.

Because of that, I wouldn't say that my mental maps were informed by what matters to me only, otherwise, I would have discarded the things about Mauritius and Port-Louis with which I have no particular attachment. I believe my designs were also inspired simply by reality. All the things and places I have seen and I know, whether they matter to me or not are part of my reality; I believe that it is why they appeared in my mental maps.
