Also Hiram is nervous about the trial because he doesn't know if he should confess to the jury, and specifically Naomi, that he thinks he knows who the third person involved in the kidnapping was. That third person could of been R.C. Rydell. Hiram doesn't want R.C. to come after him. During this chapter, Hiram talks to his grandfather about the trial. Hiram tries to get his mind off the trial, but can't help but think about everything that had to do with the death of Emmett Till. Grandpa keeps telling him to leave Greenwood, Mississippi and that he doesn't have to do the trial.

At first he is happy to reunite with his friend that he had such great memories from his childhood, but is quickly disappointed to see the physical and mental state he finds him in. Harlan (Hiram's father) got a job in Arizona State College and the family moved to Tempe. Grandpa didn't want Hiram to move to to Arizona.
