The three-act structure is a basic outline that most films follow as it allows the film to be well paced and flowing. Act one sees us introduced to the characters and the world. Act 2 sees a problem that needs to be solved, an attempt at solving and usually a failure resulting in raised stakes. Disequilibrium: just as he’s getting sober, he relapses. His whole family falls apart and there seems to he no way out. 

Recognition: his father understands his addiction after reading his journal.

Repair: the father sets out to help him. He arranges a place to meet, hopes to set him off to university and he tries to keep him sober.
