In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories was the first winner of the NCCBA in 1992. This book is a collection of seven scary stories for children. The stories are all meant to give children a fright, with the first story being about a boy running from men with teeth that keep getting longer. One of the most memorable scary stories from the book is, "The Green Ribbon," which is about a girl who always wears a green ribbon around her neck, and we find out at the end of the story that is so her head does not fall off.

Resources:
Video read aloud of "The Green Ribbon" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3PIkV2anqk&pp=ygUraW4gYSBkYXJrIGRhcmsgcm9vbSBhbmQgb3RoZXIgc2Nhcnkgc3Rvcmllcw%3D%3D

Writing Pages for students to tell about their favorite story from the book
http://thepicturebookteachersedition.blogspot.com/2012/10/in-dark-dark-room-and-other-scary.html?_sm_au_=iVV0P58Qgqv78rS5BG4tkK6kRCNsW

The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales was one of my absolute favorite books in elementary school. I remember it always being checked out from our school library, and I had to get put on a waiting list to be able to check it out. The entire book is a collection of hilarious retellings of classic fairy tales. The retellings are silly and guaranteed to make kids laugh. The illustrations are just as silly and go along perfectly with the stories. This would be a great book to use to make comparisons between the classic fairy tale and the silly retelling of it.

Resources
Jon Scieszka Author Interview
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEsxXzUqetg&pp=ygUMam9uIHNjaWVzemth

Online Word Search for Students to Complete
https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/word-search/stinky-cheese-man-and-other-fairly-stupid-tales-word-search

Lane Smith Illustrator Interview
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m2q9XAuggM&pp=ygUWbGFuZSBzbWl0aCBpbGx1c3RyYXRvcg%3D%3D

Script for Reader's Theater Activity
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Readers-Theater-The-Stinky-Cheese-Man-573730?st=c27a80c65cc0ec6e1edcf8950aa1d27e

Much of the book is written in labels and tables, rather than just reading words on a page, which appeals to young children.

The Day the Crayons Quit is a story of crayons complaining to their owner, Duncan, about how they are used. The crayons each leave a note for Duncan with their complaints about how they are used. The crayons do not necessarily quit, but are more so on strike. For example, the red crayon is tired from being overused during Christmas and Valentine’s Day and the white crayon is sad because it rarely gets used. Duncan decided to fix the problems by using all the crayons in his next drawing.

Resources
Author Interview (Long video, but could use parts of it to show students)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH7148VqpU0&pp=ygUTZHJldyBkYXl3YWx0IGF1dGhvcg%3D%3D

Book Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiQvqhtBPTs&pp=ygUldGhlIGRheSB0aGUgY3JheW9ucyBxdWl0IGJvb2sgdHJhaWxlcg%3D%3D

Opinion Writing
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Day-the-Crayons-Quit-Opinion-Writing-4113693?st=6a6907e6c605e4a821de62b9e455e0db

Reader's Theater
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Readers-Theater-The-Day-the-Crayons-Quit-3177530?st=6a6907e6c605e4a821de62b9e455e0db

Gaston meets Antionette, the poodle who has been raised in his place, at the park and they decide to switch places again to be with the family that looks the same as them. After spending some time together, they both decide that it is not the right fit for either of them and they switch back to their respective families. The two students could not agree on a favorite, so they wrote their own fairy tale that unfolds throughout the book. The girl begins to tell a story of a princess and ponies, while the boy adds a motorcycle-riding hero. The two stories start to intersect as the book progresses.
