Self Centered

A lack of a loved one leads to a self-centered lifestyle

Evidence:
'And then," said the priest, 'we asked whether it was the King who was the Accursed, and the lots said "no."
"What?' said the King. (And this is the greatest shame I have to tell of in my whole life.) His face cleared. He was only a hair's breadth from smiling. I had thought that he had seen the arrow pointed at Psyche all along, had been afraid for her, fighting for her. He had not thought of her at all, nor any of us.

[When Psyche was touching the sick and afflicted] 'King' said I, 'it will kill her.'
'Then more's the pity,' said the King. 'They'll kill us all if she stops.'

I chose self-centered as one of the words that describe the king because throughout the book he is only worried about himself. When his subjects were suffering from a plague he only did something about it to save his life. Also, even when he did do something it was sacrificing another to the disease. He did not want a male child because he wanted someone to take care of his kingdom. Instead, he wanted a male heir to keep up appearances and not to be labeled a bad king. However, he might act this way because both his spouses passed away and he did not feel a connection with Orual, Redival, or Psyche that he would with a boy. He also has to think of his kingdom, if he dies his kingdom will suffer for some time before a new ruler is put in place.

God-fearing

If you are God-fearing for your benefit, you are not a God-fearing man.

Evidence:
She was with a child before anyone could reasonably look for it, and the King was in high spirits and hardly ever ran across the fox without saying something of the prince who was to be born. He made great sacrifices to Ungit every month after that.

'If they think I can get them a captive of war at present, they must be mad. The next time I take a thief, you can cut his throat over Ungit if you like.'

I believe the King is God-fearing because he makes sacrifices and speaks of gods regularly. However, I think the reason he believes there is a god is that he wants to gain something from it. The King offers sacrifices before Pysche is born and expects to get a boy. But, when sacrifice has to be made to cure the plague and make the fields bear corn, he is hesitant to give a worthy sacrifice. He would instead give a small sacrifice and get a lot out of it than to provide a significant sacrifice to get a lot out of it. This is why I chose the second piece of evidence. In contrast to the first piece, it shows how he does not want a mutualistic relationship with the gods, but rather a symbiotic one.

Scared

Just because you are scared doesn't mean you have an excuse for hurting others

Evidence:
'Trapped!' he would say. 'No way out. They will kill me by inches. What have I done that all theses miseries should fall upon me?'

'That is why you are so wide of the mark King, when you think a thief, or an old worn-out slave, or a coward taken in battle, would do fo the Great Offering. The best in the land is not too good for this office.
The King's forehead, I saw was clammy now. The holiness and horror of divine things were continually thickening in that room.

The reason I chose scared as one of the descriptive words is that it goes along so well with self-centeredness. A man who is self-centered constantly fears for his own life or his own gain. He is paranoid and thinks immediately when the priest talks of a sacrifice it is him. He thinks that if he does anything wrong the peasants will storm the castle and kill him. He is afraid that his inability to have a son will be seen as aking him a bad leader. He fears that if he doesn't fix the plague or the barrenness of crops that he will be killed. This is a large aspect of the King's character and defines many choices he makes in the book.

Bully

No one heals themselves by hurting others; bullying is an example of this

Evidence:
"Father,' said I. 'You are right. It is fit that one should die for the people. Give me to the Brute instead of Istra.'
The King, without a word, came up to me, took me (softly enough) by the wrist and led me the whole length of the room, to where his great mirror hung.
[...]
'Ungit asked for the best in the land as her son's bride,' he said. 'And you'd give her that'

The Child, white as his master and in all his finery (my father dresses the younger slaves very fine) came running with the flagon and the royal cup slipped in the blood, reeled, and dropped both. Quick as a thought, my father whipped out a dagger and stabbed him in the side.

I chose bully as one of the words that describe the king because he is constantly hurting people around him. Even when he is not physically hurting someone around him he insults or scares them. Two examples of this are how he is always calling Orual ugly and undesirable, as well as how he told the fox that he would send him to the mines but never did. I define a bully as someone who hurts, insults or threatens others when they are feeling unpleasant emotions. The King is always taking his anger out on his daughters or servants and never really showing any compassion. However, like most bullies, he is mean because he is scared. He is afraid of what his subjects will think of him if he doesn't do everything right like having a son, ending a plague, or showing any sign of weakness.
