         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>TERM 2</strong><br><strong>Vocabulary</strong><br>Culture: Is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, etc.<br>Subculture: Is a group of people within a culture that differentiates itself from the parent culture to which it belongs, often maintaining some of its founding principles.<br>Counterculture:<strong> </strong>Culture and lifestyle of those people who reject or oppose the dominant values and behavior of society.<br>Microculture:&nbsp; Is a distinctive culture shared by a small group.<br>Diversity: The condition of having or being composed of differing elements.<br>Meso level (subgroup): Indicates a population size that falls between the micro and macro levels, such as a community or an organization.<br>Mainstream:<strong> </strong>The ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or conventional.<br>Migration:<strong> </strong>Moving to a new home in a different state, country or continent <br>Deportation: The removal from a country of an alien whose presence is unlawful or prejudicial.<br>Emigration: Leaving one country to move to another.<br>Chain migration: A series of migrations within a family or defined group of people. Begins with one family member who sends money to bring other family members.<br>Expatriates: Someone who moves from a stable country to another that is less stable.<br>Ancestors: A relative who lived a long time ago.<br>Ethnic: Associated with a particular subgroup that has a shared national original, cultural identity or race.<br>Political asylum: Protection granted by a nation to someone who has left their native country as a political refugee. <br>Population transfer: When a government forces a large group of people out of a region usually based on ethnicity or religion. (forced migration)<br>Racism: The belief that people's qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as members of your own. <br>Stereotype: A set idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong.<br>Assimilation: The process of becoming a part, or making someone become a part of a group, country, society, etc. <br>Race: A group of people with a particular similar physical characteristics, who are considered as belonging to the same type. <br>Segregation: The separation of racial or ethnic groups in daily life.<br>Glass ceiling: The invisible barrier that prevents women and minorities from advancing to the top jobs in organization. <br>Majority: A large number or part of something. The opposite of minority. <br>Sociolinguistics:<strong> </strong>The descriptive study of the effect of any and all aspects of society, including cultural norms, expectations, and context, on the way language is used, and society’s effects on language.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<br>Morphology: The study of words, how they are formed and their relationship to other words in the same language.&nbsp;<br>Language acquisition: The process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend language, as well as to produce and use words and sentences to communicate.<br>Phonetics: A branch of linguistics that studies how humans make and perceive sounds, or in the case of sign languages, the equivalent aspects of&nbsp;<br>Pragmatics: A subfield of linguistic semiotics that studies the ways in which ci¡ontext contributes to meaning.&nbsp;<br>Semantics: The study of meaning.&nbsp;</div><div>Neurolinguistics:<strong> </strong>The study of the neural mechanisms in the human brain that control the comprehension, production, and acquisition of language.&nbsp;</div><div>Metalanguage: A language used to describe another language, often called the objective language.&nbsp;<br>Syntax: The set of rules, principles, and processes that govern the structure of sentences in a given language, usually including word order.&nbsp;<br>Phonology: a branch of linguistics that studies how languages are dialects systematically organize their sounds.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
