Many people derive meaning and value from their careers, something they've worked really hard on/for their whole lives, so having to stop doing that can be jarring.

I think that for a little while it does decrease occupational balance as many are not sure how to live life differently than they are used to including routine changes and interests.

I think identity can many times be constructed as a contrast to someone who doesn't have that identity, so when you become more similar to them (i.e. not working anymore after being employed) you feel a sense of resistance or loss of self

It also is the biggest source of accomplishment for many. Historically for men, it was told that it was their purpose as providers as well.

Many of these limitations are often a result of circumstances that cannot be changed and can negatively impact occupational satisfaction. Lack of resources can be very limiting.
