The beginning of the Scottsboro Boys 80 year trial, began on March 25, 1931 in Jackson County, Alabama on a Southern Railroad freight train, when a fight broke out between a group of white and colored boys. The white boys were enraged when kicked of the train and set a plan of lies to make it the colored boys fault, after many accused the white boys of starting the fight. Then to make the situation for the young boys even worse, two women who were on the train falsely accused the colored boys of raping them.

Saga of the Scottsboro Boys-1931

After the dishonesty of the two women, the nine colored boys were arrested and sent to the local county seat to await their trial. Word got out about the accused rape and soon a whole bunch of angry white men surrounded the jail, leading to a call from the Sheriff to the Alabama National Guard to prevent a lynching.

Leroy Wright Trial-1932

Unfortunately for the Scottsboro Boys, the first few trials were done quickly and had sentenced eight of them to death. Now the ninth and youngest member of the Scottsboro Boys, being a minor, had been sentenced to a hanging when one juror favored life imprisonment over the death penalty. Mistrial was in-action and Mr. Leroy Wright, the colored young boy, remained in prison until 1937 awaiting the final verdict on his co-defendants.

When the truth started to spread about what really happened, people, from both racisms, began to fight for the freedom of 9 colored boys. Trials were packed, but still it wasn't enough, 2 of the Scottsboro Boys were sentenced to death penalty while the remaining 5 awaited their final trials.

While 7/8 of the boys were freed, one was lost, and the boys, who became like brothers, payed him the respect of staying strong during the unruly terms.

On November 7, 1932, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 7-2 majority decision in the case of Powell v. Alabama. It overturned the conviction of the Scottsboro Boys. Based upon the 6^th Amendment for the lack of proper legal representation
