Question 3 - Disadvantages of Pneumatics

There are a number of disadvantages of pneumatics.
Starting with preparation; compressed air requires conditioning before it is used to ensure reliability, efficiency and to prevent damage to system components. this conditioning includes;

- Removal of particulates, i.e Filtering.
- Removal of moisture.
- Temperature control; to ensure that compressed air doesn't condense out by further cooling in the service line.

Another disadvantage is compressible; it is not always possible to achieve uniform & constant speeds with compressed air.

Cost; Compressed air is a relatively expensive means of conveying power, however, the high energy costs are partially compensated for by inexpensive components & good performance.

Leakage; system efficiency is dramatically reduced by system leaks.

Noise; exhaust air from a pneumatic system is loud; however, this can be significantly reduced by the use of sound absorbent materials & silencers.

And finally, Force; considerably lower forces produced than in a hydraulic system.

Question 17 - What is an Air Service Unit?

An Air Service Unit conditions compressed air and consists of 3 components.
The filter/moisture separator, to protect components, the pressure regulator and the oil lubricator.
As the compressed air enters the filter/moisture separator, moisture is forced into a whirling flow pattern by directional louvers. As the air has now been forced to spin any liquid particles within it are thrown by centrifugal force against the inside of the bowl, they then run down into the bottom of the bowl and can then be removed by the drain valve. The baffle maintains a 'quiet zone' preventing air turbulence from picking the liquid and returning it to the air stream. Dry air then passes through the filter element to remove solid contaminants.
The oil lubricator consists of an oil reservoir and a viaduct assembly connected via a siphon tube. An oil lubricator adds a metered amount of lubricant to air for internal lubrication of pneumatic tools. It works on the venturi principle, as a result of a depression caused by the flow of air through the lubricator; oil is drawn through the siphon tube into the viaduct assembly. Oil is metered through an oil control valve and is atomised and taken up by the air stream.
