Emma Lazarus was an American poet and writer.

She was born on July 22, 1849, in New York City, New York, USA.

Emma Lazarus is best known for her poem "The New Colossus," which is inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.

"The New Colossus" is famous for its lines: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Lazarus wrote this poem in 1883 as part of a fundraising effort to build the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.

Her work championed the cause of immigrants and refugees, and she is considered a symbol of American ideals of freedom and welcome to newcomers.

The federal government aimed to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream US society by encouraging them towards farming and agriculture, which meant dividing tribal lands into individual plots. Only the Native Americans who accepted the division of tribal lands were allowed to become US citizens.
