St. Pauls Cross

This picture is one I took in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. This cross is bumpy and full of holes and jutting out structures. This is the first cross I've seen that hasn't been smooth and I think that reflects on my view of religion and spirituality as well. Going into this interview, I was most interested to see how M would answer the question about spirituality, as I had always seen her as a person of strong faith, like my parents. I grew up with two parents who never expressed any questioning of their faith, religion or spirituality, even in times of loss or grief. After talking with M, I realized that spirituality can be a bumpy road, and that it can push and pull us. Her story about how she lost her spirituality with one death and gained it back with another was really powerful for me and made me rethink my idea of spirituality, just like this sculpture made me rethink my idea of the cross.

Family Picture

One of the most important things I got out from my interviews with M is the community that arises from grief and loss. This picture is from Christmas last year, when the entirety of my mom's side of the family (including M) got together to celebrate. This picture reminds me of what M said about people who come together and support each other during times of loss and grief. It reminds me of all the people I have in my corner who will be there for me if I were to go through a time of grief and loss. I think its also meaningful that M is in this picture. I believe this to be meaningful as after these interviews, M knows I am in her corner and will support her through her grief, and looking back at this picture I know she will be in mine.
