Comparison #1: Setting of Fantasy World

Both films, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Coraline", have the main characters discovering a mystical land to which they escape. The introductory of both come somewhat similarly. Coraline finds the secret little door by following some mice that ran around her house. Alice had found her entrance when she followed a rabbit into his rabbit hole.
When comparing the two, they are very different, with Coraline going in and out of her "Fantasy World", while Alice only enters hers once until she leaves.
The "Fantasy World" in "Alice In Wonderland" is a completely new environment, full of whimsical people and mythical nature. Coraline's "Fantasy World" is more of an alternate reality. To Coraline, it was seemingly the perfect version of everything she wanted.

Comparison #2: Message Of Story

While both stories have some parallels, they do have different messages. Alice in Wonderland focuses more on the curiosity and wonder of a child, with Alice going down a rabbit hole out of curiosity to find the wonders of a different world. Similarly, Coraline also goes to her "rabbit hole", but that message is more about the relationships between a kid and their parents.

Comparison #3: Animation of Films

The Animation of both films is very different, one uses stop motion claymation and takes much longer than live-action movies. Coraline took 500 people and over 18 months to make. They had to make 600 mouths and 300 brows just for Coraline, not including the rest of the characters and 150 different sets. There a multiple movie iterations of Alice in Wonderland but they were in live action which makes production a lot less pain staking then the multiple different clay characters and movements. There is CGI in the latest Alice in Wonderland and it takes an immense amount of knowledge and Computer science skills to master CGI for a movie.

Coralline and Alice are very similar in their stories they both start off finding a secret place with talking creatures leading them to it. Coralline runs into a cat and Alice runs into a rabbit. They are both tired of they way their life is going. So once they find this magical place they feel as if they never want to go back. They then have a realization that their worlds are not as good as they think and had to find a way to fix it as only they remember the situation they were in as if nothing happened.

When looking for a connection to Coraline, I think the part that really stood out was her relationship with her parents. Coraline's parents did not provide her with the attention she wanted, which led to her looking for alternate solutions to fill that need. When she found the secret door to her "other family" she thought she found what she needed. Similarly I sometimes feel I don't get the recognition from my parents and often look for other sources of approval. While I know my parents care it is easy to forget, and sometimes those other sources of approval aren't quite what I need.

Much like Jonathan’s I connect to the story’s where Coraline feels negatively towards her parents but in the ends she appreciates them being there for her and trying their best. I can connect to this because certain times in life you feel like your parents are getting in the way and do things to you for no reason like take certain things away from you, but then you realize that they aren’t trying to hurt you they are trying to help you. It’s not because they don’t care it’s because they do.
