April 16 - May 2 1945

Soviet Red Army attacked the city of Berlin from the East. German forces fought desperately to defend the city but the Soviets took over the city. Hitler who had been hiding in a bunker underground committed suicide when he realized there was no way to win.

Germany vs Soviet Union

Hitler aimed to destroy the economy of the Soviet Union so he ordered his army to seize the city of Stalingrad where all of their resources were. The German soldiers were not prepared to fight in the cold weather and lost many soldiers. In November Soviet soldiers surrounded the city and by February 91,000 German soldiers surrendered.

Operation began June 6, 1944 and lasted for several weeks

Ships carrying thousands of Allied soldiers landed on the five different beaches of Normandy to surprise attack the German forces. American troops landed on Utah beach and were able to quickly capture the beach while British and Canadian troops also succeeded in the East. On Ohama beach the Germans had an advantage because of the geography of the beach which made the American troops consider evacuation until backup arrived and the Allies succeeded.

July 1943

After the German's defeat in the Battle of Stalingrad, Hitler planned an attack on the Soviets to show that they still have power and control. Hitler planned the operation for May but delayed it to better prepare which also gave the Soviets time to prepare their defenses. The Soviet defenses were too great and they were able to halt Germany's advance.
