The title Of Mice and Men symbolically represents the way mankind seeks to destroy those who seemingly hold no value within society. Mice represent those who are looked upon with scorn, much as Lennie is. It also relates to the Robert Burns quote "The best laid schemes of Mice and Men Gang aft agley [go awry],” which is indeed the case in this novel. It suggests, too, that the concerns of mice and men are of equivalent importance.

The title "Of Mice and Men" came from one of Steinbeck's poems. In the poem, the narrator accidentally plows through a mouse nest. He pauses and figures that no matter how different we may seem, both animals and humans will all die in the end. What this title represents, I believe, is that just like Lennie accidentally kills all his pet mice, he accidentally sets up his own death; he is too strong for a man of his intelligence.

The hidden meaning of the title, "Of Mice and Men," means the difference between Lennie and everyone else. The title is inspired by the poem called "To a Mouse." Lennie represents the mouse in the poem because how he is different compared to the others. The mouse in the poem made a secure house to stay safe, but still died due to someone using a plough. Lennie is killed in the end, regardless of his intentions. The poem views the mouse and humans to have differences, but are all mortal. Lennie might have been different, but he was still a living being.

The hidden meaning would probably be that dreams get crushed and you have to move on.
