In other words, it is the perfect time to incorporate assessments that will help the student identify areas of interest. Once having identified these areas, the students can better communicate their strengths and interests to the team. This discussion can be introduced during the IEP meeting, so the entire team learns about the students to brainstorm supports to better prepare them. This is to allow the students to know the schools and careers in their area that they would like to pursue. As stated by Bross and Travers (2017), the ideal next step is to survey “the school environment to identify people, locations, and experiences that align with the student’s SIA. To identify people, the special education teacher could make an announcement to the entire school staff at a faculty meeting, approach teachers and solicit their support, or send a request via e-mail”. In other words, communicating the student's interests to the entire school allows identifying teachers and staff that might have some experience in their interest that can be assigned as their mentors. To guide them with discussions and recommendations of the paths they can take for specific careers and education. This allows the student to get to know themselves more and the possible paths they would like to venture in. This also leads to the refinement of the IEP transition goals to be more reflective of the pathways that may have been suggested to them by teachers and staff.

According to Bross and Travers (2017), it is important to consider “the student’s daily schedule (i.e., experiences) with specific IEP and transition plan goals to be targeted for instruction throughout the school day. The purpose is to identify opportunities to practice targeted skills aligned with the SIA”. In other words, we want students to actively practice the development of skills throughout instruction. This allows them to know and better themselves in preparation for their ultimate decision. In other words, students are now well prepared to discuss their experience in school and communicate the plan they have created for post-secondary. After having practiced these skills all 4 years, they now know themselves well enough to make the final decisions on their goals and the next steps they will be taking post-high school. They also have a good understanding of their environment and the opportunities they can take to fulfill their dreams.
