Autism is a developmental disorder that has a range of characteristics, often referred to as an 'umbrella'. Autism derives from the greek word autos, referring to self. Skill deficits often displayed in students with Autism, but not subjected to, are social development, language development, and restricted interests. 

  1. Social Development may refer to, but is not subjected to:
  • Sensitive to change/routine e.g. going to the postoffice before going home like usual
  • Unresponsive to name 
  • Lack eye contact
  • Lack sharing skills e.g. doesn't tolerate sharing toys/tangibles with peers

2.   Language Development may refer to, but is not subjected to:
  • Lack expression of feelings
  • Lack language to express wants and needs 

3.   Restricted interests may refer to, but is not subjected to:
  • Echolalia e.g. repeat statements 
  • Stimming and/or stereotypy 
  • Perseverate on certain topics e.g. obsession with appliances, ABC's, numbers, etc.

    • Applied Behavior Analysis is a type of therapy that focuses on reinforcement based procedures which teach individuals to respond to natural cues in their environment. Some ABA clinics might focus on reducing challenging problem behaviors, teaching communication skills, teaching appropriate play skills, as well as independent living skills.
