A good beginning to any story makes the reader curious, explain what you are curious about so far in your reading.

I am curious about what will happen later in the reading, like if they will capture a certain location. Maybe they will also have more conflict with the Vietnamese: they already killed multiple people in the beginning.

Invent a surprising twist that could happen in your book but hasn’t (yet). Describe your plot twist and how it would change the story.

The plot twist that I came up with is that the story takes place shortly after the war ends and the main character is hallucinating all of this after taking a superfluous amount of drugs. The main character is unhinged in his own house as the attempts by his own family to rehabilitate him are feckless. This would make sense in the story as soldiers in the Vietnam War were known to use a lot of drugs and soldiers returning from combat usually suffer from PTSD.

I would probably compare it to Forrest Gump. My reason for this is the film is about Forrest Gump, a veteran, who has memories of fighting in the Vietnam War.
