Summary

"Revenge of the Geeks" by Alexandra Robbins is about the authors personal experience observing and analyzing the behaviors of excluded High School and Middle School students. Specifically, how they turn the things for which they are bullied or excluded into their successes later in their lives. Seeking to highlight this, Robbins begins talking about celebrities like Tim Gunn and Taylor Swift and how what they were once made fun of for has now made them successful. With this considered, the essay finished talking about how this experience of being an outsider largely disappears as adulthood sets in and people evolve to be mature enough to accept people's differences. Clearly, the author wrote this to comfort those who are excluded, but also to invalidate the idea that their uniqueness was anything but an asset.

"In the rabidly conformist school environment, the qualities that make people different make them targets. In adulthood, however, the qualities that make people different make them compelling." (Robbins 7)

Importance:
This passage from the argument could be considered the most significant quote because it captures the main idea of the story and unit. The idea that your status in high school does not stay with you once you graduate is one kids are being told constantly nowadays, but still refuse to believe it. Throughout her story, this is the point the author is trying to get across to her audience, and further she offers evidence supporting it. Additionally, the author attempts to dispute any claims to the contrary with her own personal observations and research, making this idea central to the story.

Craft and Structure

In this story, Alexandra Robbins uses the art of parallelism and parallel structure in order to focus on the main idea of the argument. Parallel structure is the use of similar grammatical forms or patterns to express ideas of equal significance. Robbins was successful in getting her point across because the writing flowed and every sentence had meaning towards the focus. For example, in the text, Robbins states, "Research shows that they are more likely... to conform... They are more likely to be both targets and instigators of aggression... They are more likely to drink and engage in risky behavior." (Robbins 13). The repetition shows parallelism, which is effective because it keeps readers engaged, which, in turn, will help to get the author's message and information across better. If the style of writing is more memorable, the content will be, as well.
