It includes maps, as well as detailed descriptions of the geography of The Battle of New Market, helping the reader understand the battles better. Likewise, it also gives you lots of information on the main generals. In the first three pages of the text, the source elaborates on generals Lee, Grant, Breckinridge, and Sigel. This source is a fantastic place to find any information that you could want. It even contains a table of contents, making it that much easier to locate what you want.

This letter is Samuel Atwill's accounting book which he writes to his parents. This shows how he (and the rest of the cadets) were just like me. They still have basic needs, and ask for things from their parents like I do. Also, it goes with the movie because the same boys that fought and died in the movie, are the same boys who rely on their parents for pencils, folders, and other essentials. They, however, were forced to take on a man's job, risking their lives for a rich man's war.

Room for Improvement

Even though The Field of Lost Shoes was a fantastic movie, there is still room for improvement. First of all, the plot moved too fast for my liking. There was little time to get to know the characters and to get attached. It seemed as though the audience finally met all the characters and was getting a feel for the movie and then they plunge into war, and some of them die. If they weren't lost entirely, their life was unturned entirely. Also, it could be argued that the movie is graphic in some areas, and quite sad. If I were to change it, I would give the audience ample time to understand the characters and what is going on.

The Field of Lost Shoes taught me a lot about the Civil War. I learned just how desperate each side was to win the war. The Confederates resolved to use boys to fight in a war that hardly applied to them. Also, I didn't realize that not everyone fighting for a side agreed with their ideals. Many Confederate soldiers didn't believe in slavery but fought out of duty to their fellow soldiers. Lastly, I looked up primary sources from VMI to help me understand the rest.

The Field of Lost Shoes is a movie about a smaller, but more written-about battle, The Battle of New Market. The thesis is coming of age. A group of boys is thrust into the harsh conditions of war. They experience themes of bravery, courage, and brotherhood along the way. The film is also informational, presenting viewers with information on the modern-day ceremonies that take place each year at VMI to honor the cadets who died in the battle.

The Field of Lost Shoes takes place during the Civil War. It starts at the Virginia Military Institute, where a group of cadets welcome a newcomer by going and stealing from a slave named "Old Judge". They continue with military life, meeting women, and talking about their futures. They soon get called to the war front as Confederate reserves. They soon get tasked with frontline action, where they have experiences that most men never will. They lost 10 cadets, and many more were injured. Some of the original group of friends are killed, and then at the end of the movie, there is a modern-day ceremony for those cadets who died in the Battle of New Market.

The Field of Lost Shoes is a fantastic option for high schoolers and their history projects. It provides a very entertaining movie, as it is realistic, historically accurate, and relatable to teens. Personally, my favorite character was John Wise. I enjoy his humor, bravery, moral compass, as well as his sense of duty towards his comrades. Personally, I would give the movie a 4.5 out of 5 and would recommend it for anyone interested in watching it.

The Red Badge of Courage - Stephen Crane

The Red Badge of Courage is a short novel, about a young boy who is thrilled for war, ready to get onto the battlefield and do a real man's job. However, he soon realizes that war is not for him, and is very different from what he had originally thought. One could read this book to get a glimpse into what life on the frontlines would be like, but from a teenage boy's perspective. It is very readable, so anyone could read it.

Hollywood vs. History

While the Field of Lost Shoes was filmed with rather remarkable precision to how the event happened historically, there are still some key differences compared to what the film showed. For example, John Wise a main character in the film, was fictionalized to portray a variety of different people historically. Also, the scene at the beginning of the movie is likely a fallacy and made up purely to entertain the audience. There are other small inaccuracies too, including the weather on the day of the battle, and the conversation that happened between the cadets on the battlefield. In the movie, the day of the battle was nice and sunny, whereas historically it was stormy and grey. This caused the mud from which the soldiers lost their shoes. Lastly, the writers most definitely made up the conversation during the battle to add suspense and entertainment.

https://warmoviebuff.blogspot.com/2021/05/anniversary-field-of-lost-shoes-2014.html

The two sources are very similar. The movie and newspaper both explain how mysterious General Sigel's movements were, and how he refused advice from almost everyone.

Also, there is an emphasis on how many troops were lost in the Battle of New Market. Many Confederate soldiers were killed in the battle, which is emphasized especially in the movie and partially in the article. Then, both show and explain the retreat by incompetent General Sigel.
