"And what am I going to do now?"
The use of a rhetorical question, questions the readers perception of Stephen as it signifies that Stephen is trying to make his own decisions and feels lost as there are many unanswered questions he has. The word "what" in this context refers to Stephen questioning himself about what he should do. This is a pivotal moment as Stephen starts to show a slow, but progressive change in character

"I feel as if my head's going to burst" - Hyperbole

Hyperbole is the intentional use of extreme exaggeration to create a comical effect. Stephen's head is not going to literally burst. This emphasises how Stephen has so many questions through his mind that it might "burst". "[B]urst" is a sudden action that suggests something energetic and quick.

A simile adds emphasis to a phrase by exaggerating the reality of the situation. "Rattling" means to make a series of knocking sounds". In reference to the phrase, it shows that Stephen's teeth are hitting each other at a fast pace, stimulating a fearful and tense moment

The two senses compliment each other therefore emphasising the darkness. This suggests that the darkness is overwhelming for Stephen as it completely surrounds him. The reader appreciates the visual aspect of the "darkness" more.
Furthermore, darkness doesn't have a "shape" yet Stephen is implying that it is something we can see. "[D]efined entirely" indicates that he is suffocated by nothing but the sound of silence.

The visual imagery creates an atmosphere complimenting its surroundings by adding deep emphasis. The word "serene" invokes a sense of peace, forming an ambience of light and peace. The atmosphere made contrasts with the darkness within the world. The boys are searching for clues within a dark tunnel but Furthermore, the word "white" adds immense emphasis to the phrase by elaborating on the purity and calmness of the world, once again refuting the idea of a world of calamity, a world that is filled with mysteries, incomplete answers and bewilderment and that Kieth and Stephen are in a situation of despair because of misunderstandings of the situation, Mrs. Hayward mom being a spy.

"murmur" suggests the wires are talking amongst themselves mimicking how Stephen is surrounded by his overwhelming thoughts. The use of personification could symbolise how no matter where Stephen is, he is unable to escape his thoughts as if they are following him. This indicates that he is carrying a heavy burden.
