The rock cycle is a continuous process where rocks are trasnformed from one type to another over time. It is driven by forces like heat, pressure and weathering, constantly reshaping the Earth's surface.

Here's a breakdown of the cycle and the processes involved:

1-Magma formation and soldification (igneous rocks)

The cycle often begins with molten rock called Magma (underground) or lava (on the surface). This molten material originates from the Earth's crust or mantle (layers).

• Melting: occurs due to increased temperature, decreased pressure or any changes in its composition.

• Solidification (crystallization): as Magma or lava cools, it solidifies forming igneous rocks. The rate of cooling affects the crystal size. Fast cooling leads to small crystals (basalt rocks) while slow cooling results in larger crystals (granite).

2-Weathering,Erosion and Sedimentation (sedimentary rocks)

Igneous rocks exposed to Earth's surface are constantly broken.

• Weathering: the breakdown of rocks at the surface through physical and chemical (acid rain) processes.

• Erosion: the transportation of weathered material by wind,water,ice or gravity.

• Sedimentation: the deposition and accumulation of sediments in layers. Over time, these layers are compacted and cemented together.

3-Burial and Compaction (sedimentary rocks)

As more sediments gathers,the layers beneath are subjected to having more pressure.

• Burial: sediments are buried deeper and deeper to become basins or depressions.

• Compaction: the weight of overlying sediments squeezes out water and air and packs the particles closer together.

• Cementation: dissolved minerals in water penetrating the sediment acts as cement.These processes turn loose sediments into solid rocks such as limestone,shale etc.

4-Metamorphism

Changes in temperature and pressure cause the existing rock minerals to recrystallize, forming new minerals and textures.

For example: marble,slate etc.

5-Melting (Magma)

Finally, if metamorphic rocks are subjected to more higher temperatures, they can melt, forming Magma once again, and then restarting the cycle.

• What it is: The process where molten rock (magma or lava) cools and solidifies to form igneous rocks.

• Examples: Basalt, Granite.

• What it is: The breaking down of rocks into smaller particles by natural forces such as wind, water, and ice.

• Examples: Sediments like sand, clay, and silt.

3. Sedimentation:

• What it is: The process where eroded material accumulates in layers, often in bodies of water, and eventually forms sedimentary rocks.

• Examples: Sandstone, Limestone.

4. Burial:

• What it is: Layers of sediment build up over time and become compressed under the weight of more sediment, leading to increased pressure and temperature.

• Examples: The formation of shale from compacted clay.

5. Metamorphism:

• What it is: The process where rocks are altered due to intense heat and pressure beneath the Earth's surface, resulting in the formation of metamorphic rocks.

• Examples: Marble (from limestone), Slate (from shale).

• What it is: When rocks are heated to such high temperatures that they melt, turning into magma.
