They are very poor yet they stay together and are happy together with what they have. The thing getting them through this is each other. Both characters are so selfless and decide to buy the other something to accompany their priced possessions. "don't look at me like that. I had my hair cut off and sold it. I couldn't live trough Christmas without giving you a gift. My hair will grow again." pages 4-5. The young boy gave the Bell Cricket to one girl for no reason at all. Juan has a secret and writes a letter to her and out of all people he decides to trust her with this. This secret could determine weather he lives or not if he is caught. He went through a year of trying to get to the top just to get his letter out to her. "And that's why Juan's so down in the dumps: thinking that something might happen to Mariana because of his letters." 21-22 page 90. The owner has many animals but the only one aloud to be by her dog it one duck otherwise it scares everyone else away. They are always playing, cuddling, or around each other. We are a good example because, we are always with each other, we are always talking and making each other feel good, we always there for each other. Our parents say we have joint custody and whenever she's at my house or I'm at her house we are comfortable doing anything we would do at our own.
