Stand Watie was a leader of the cherokees and served on the Cherokee Council. But before this, gold was being discovered in the Cherokee lands of Georgia, so the Cherokee were encouraged to move west to Oklahoma on the Indian Territory. This was the Treaty of Echota signed in January of 1836. The Watie brothers supported the treaty but for those who didn't, they were eventually forced to move West and this led to many deaths, known as the "Trail of Tears".

All his life his family members were always falling apart at his side. His brothers were killed and so were other relatives that were involved in the treaty of Echota (when they were told to move west). This treaty caused a lot of division within his own people and one of his biggest enemies was John Ross and he was the principal chief of the Cherokee nation. Stand Watie died September 9th 1871 along the Honey Creek in his home.
