His named changed a few times, but officially became Stand Watie after combining his Cherokee and christian names. But before this, gold was being discovered in the Cherokee lands of Georgia, so the Cherokee were encouraged to move west to Oklahoma on the Indian Territory. This was the Treaty of Echota signed in January of 1836. His brothers were killed and so were other relatives that were involved in the treaty of Echota (when they were told to move west). This treaty caused a lot of division within his own people and one of his biggest enemies was John Ross and he was the principal chief of the Cherokee nation.
