There's something about the size and simplicity of the format that feels manageable too, and often far less daunting than a big blank page. Each time I make one it feels like a real accomplishment - like creating a mini book! 

You can make and use zines in a functional journalistic way, to document your life, thoughts and feelings; or you can use them as a platform to tell the stories you want to tell.

These fairs are wonderful ways to not only meet new and lovely artists, but also a great way to have a nosy and see how different people are utilising the idea of a zine or book. Here you can see how someone can start an indie publisher using only the printer in their garage!

It's a virtual, collaborative, collective, event which happens every year on Twitter & Instagram, where illustrators/ artists document each hour of their day in comic form

It's a great opportunity to turn the mundane into a comic/ something fun/ (sometimes existential?)

The time pressure/ constraints means you are less precious about the artwork, allowing you the space to explore concept and narrative, rather than beautiful artwork

I loved messing about with the library photocopier when I was at uni. It always took several attempts to get all the pages the right way around, but it was a lot of fun, and really channels that old school original zine vibe

- Your Home Printer! Your old and trusted home printer is your best friend when it comes to making zines - and by far the cheapest method. All forms of zine can begin using your home printer.

- Your Home Scanner! You can Draw a One Page Zine, then scan it in and print! Then you have 20 duplicate zines just like that.

- The print studios here! Could you play with making some screen printed zines? Could you make a one page zine in litho? Could you etch a zine?!!

- 16 tonne (Riso Printing here in bristol). Zines look great and textured in riso, and it's a great way to experiment with colour. One Page zines are easy and cheap through this method.

- Risotto (Riso Printing) - these guys are great to get riso zines printed with and have great guides on how to set tup for print etc

- Mixam are a great and affordable printing service for all sorts - zines, posters, postcards etc.! And they have lots of different types of papers and finishes for you to choose from!

Whether created by illustrators, writers or musicians. Their focus has always been content over the artwork... they exist as an approachable way to pass along your thoughts. They exist as a way for anyone and everyone to have a voice - regardless of how niche the subject of focus is!

In the 90's, the Riot Grrrl movement was devoted to challenging the male-driven punk scene by encouraging women to start their own band and accompanying zine.

A zine (pronounced: ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. A fanzine (blend of fan and magazine) is a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon (such as a literary or musical genre) for the pleasure of others who share their interest.

The term was coined in an October 1940 science fiction fanzine by Russ Chauvenet and popularized within science fiction fandom, entering the Oxford English Dictionary in 1949.

But ultimately, zines are just a great and easy way to get across a story or a thought! They're great for trying out ideas, trying out different colour palettes and also a wonderful way for you and your friends to collaborate and make something together. Zines are made for having a play, they don't need to be perfect.
