Heartmate 3 is the newest left ventricular assist device (LVAD) for those patients with advanced heart failure. The heartmate 3 is surgically implanted at the apex of the left ventricle. The heart is still able to function normally, the heartmate 3 assists by using its centrifugal-force motor, allowing the blood to be circulated from the left ventricle to maintain homeostasis. This allows patients with advanced heart failure to continue their normal lifestyle and provides them hope by bridging them to destination therapy. LVADs also allow a bridge to recovery after cardiogenic shock or trauma, and can bridge them till transplant. With the Heartmate 3’s newest technology by advancing the motor, the Heartmate 3 gives a lower turbulence than the comparison of its older model the Heartmate 2. The new centrifugal pump optimizes the blood flow therefore decreasing the risk for pump thrombosis (Medgadget, 2018).

Meaning more patients are candidates today and can receive this device.

There is a better survival rate one-year post-implant of 74% in comparison the its predecessor, the heartmate 2 at 68% survival rate 1-year post implant (Birati & Jessup, 2015)

Minimal surgical approach versus the prior heartmate 2 (Scmitto, Krabatsch, Damme, & Netuka, 2018).

The need for organ transplant exceeds the supply of hearts to transplant.

My opinion of using mechanical hearts is solid. With the benefits of the new motor, safety is key. From experience, thrombolytic therapy, risks of bleeding, and thrombosis were always the biggest concerns. If the new motor can decrease risk of thrombosis, then I am all for them.

I found the family was usually exhausted after years of their loved one suffering with symptomatic heart failure. Years of exhausting medication therapy, frequent visits to their specialist, and living in a world of chronic fatigue. The benefits of living a normal life is worth it.

The education provided by the mechanical heart teams are usually phenomenal. The mechanical heart nurse, engineer and surgeon are always on call to help with questions or troubleshooting. I have seen the heartmate 2 save so many lives, the heartmate 3 is only better.
