The Golden Gate is a unique structure in the defensive system of the city. There are two versions of the name "golden". At the top of the golden gate was the Church of the Annunciation, and the first version says that the domes of the church were gilded, which gave grounds for the name of the gate. The second option is the "golden" gate, which means the main, solemn gates. The gates were intended for ceremonial entry into the capital and were located in the southern part of the city.

The Brodsky Choral Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Kyiv, Ukraine. It was built in the Romanesque Revival style resembling a classical basilica. The original tripartite facade with a large central avant-corps flanked by lower wings also echoed the characteristic design of some Moorish Revival synagogues, such as the Leopoldstädter Tempel in Vienna. The synagogue was built between 1897 and 1898. It was designed by Georgiy Shleifer. A sugar magnate and philanthropist Lazar Brodsky financed its construction.

For many decades the local and imperial authorities forbade the construction of a monumental place of Jewish worship in Kyiv, as they feared that this would facilitate the growth of the Jewish community in Kyiv, which, being a big trading and industrial city, would then become an important Jewish religious center. This was considered "undesirable" due to the symbolic importance of Kyiv, as the cradle of Russian Orthodoxy. It was only allowed to convert existing buildings into Jewish worship houses.

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine and one of the oldest cities in Europe. It has a long history and rich culture. There are many ancient churches, cathedral, monuments, outstanding buildings and museums in it. All in all the city of Kiev has a great number of interesting sights. Perhaps the most beautiful and famous ones are Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Saint Sophia’s Cathedral, Golden Gates of Kiev, the Monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky, and Khrischatyk-street. Let me tell you a little bit about each of these places. The most visited sight in Kiev is the ancient monastery of Kiev Pechersk Lavra, also known as Kiev Monastery of the Caves. This historic and religious sight got its name after the district where it is located. Every year millions of visitors come to see its unique buildings and take a tour along the caves. This monastery exists for more than 900 years. The second interesting and ancient sight of Kiev is Saint Sophia’s Cathedral. It once was a cathedral temple of Kiev Metropolis. Today it’s an outstanding architectural monument and a popular museum. Both the Kiev Pechersk Lavra and Saint Sophia’s Cathedral are recognized by the UNESCO heritage. Golden Gates of Kiev also refer to the historical landmarks of the city. The Golden Gates are situated not far from the Cathedral of Saint Sophia. They once were the gateway in the ancient city fortress. Today, it is an interesting museum with the monument to Yaroslav the Wise in front. Many tourists come to see the Monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky at Sophia Square. He used to be the 17th century Cossack hetman and a great military leader. The central street of Kiev is Khreschatik. With the length of 1.2 km, it is one of the longest streets in Europe. Khreschatik runs through three squares: European Square, Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Bessarabskaya Square. Other places of interest in Kiev include the Andriyivskyy Descent, St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, the State Historical Museum of Ukraine and many others.

The Sophia Cathedral or St. Sophia of Kyiv was built during the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise to commemorate a great victory gained by the Kyivans at this site over the Pechenehy, who had been constantly threatening Kyiv and devastating Rus lands.

The Sophia Cathedral suffered destiny of many structures of Old Rus. It was ruined in the 13th c. during the Tatar invasion and subsequently suffered many times from wars and religious strife.

Metropolitan Petro Mohyla restored the cathedral in 1633. During the 17-18th cc., as a result of many alterations, the cathedral acquired the architectural aspect which has come down to us. During this time an ensemble of buildings in the style of Ukrainian baroque was created around the cathedral consisting of the Metropolitan's palace, the refectory church, the belfry and the fence.

Of unique value, from the scientific and the artistic points of view, are the ancient mosaic decorations in the cathedral, which ornament the principal altar, the central dome, the arches and pillars. The art of mosaic inlay work, which was widespread in Byzantium, was further developed in Kyiv. Employing smalts, the artists of the 11th c. created remarkable pictures.

Most of the ancient frescos were covered by later oil paintings. As a result of research work conducted within the cathedral, the original frescos were discovered. Of considerable interest are the portrait representations, discovered in the central nave, of the members of the family of Yaroslav the Wise: his wife Irina and three daughters — Anna, Yelizaveta and Anastasia. On the opposite side two figures of his younger sons have been preserved. The image of Yaroslav the Wise, which was painted on the western wall, has not come down to us.

The frescos of the two staircase towers depict the life and manners of Old Rus. Here we have hunting scenes, dances, performances of musicians, buffoons, and so forth.

A precious specimen of artistic carving is the white marble sarcophagus of Yaroslav the Wise. Also worthy of attention are the bronze gilded doors in the western wall with ornaments of the 17th c. and the filigree carved wooden iconostasis of the 18th c.

The cathedral and the entire set of buildings are of great cultural value for the Ukrainian people. It has therefore been declared a state monument-museum.

Marina Bazylevych, 6-B
The Golden Gate was built in 1017 by Yaroslav the Wise as one of three main entrances in the Kiev city walls. It was originally called the Southern Gate, then the Great Gate of Kive, and later called the Golden Gate. Partially destroyed in 1240 by the Golden Horde, the ruins were excavated in 1832 and the gate was completely reconstructed by the Soviets in 1982. Nobody knows exactly how it looked, so architects used their imaginations based on historic descriptions. On the west side of the gate is a statue of Yaroslav the Wise. It was erected in 1997.Inside the gate are the ruins of the original gate and a small museum. It was believed that the original gate was topped by a church. A small non-functioning church was constructed with the rest of the gate. There are also some nice views at the top. You can see Golden Gate Square below and the Renaissance Hotel, which is one of the more interesting buildings on the square.

This majestic 13-domed church was named after the famous St Sophia’s Cathedral located in Constantinople. The Cathedral was built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise to commemorate the victory over the Pechenegs and to glorify Christianity. The church became a holy place of worship for ancient Kievites as well as a major cultural and political centre in Kievan Rus. It was often used to receive foreign diplomats and negotiate treaties. The Christian school for rich people’s children and the first Kievan-Rus library founded by Yaroslav the Wise were situated here. St Sophia’s made a huge impression on the ordinary citizens of Kiev in that era, with its rich frescoes and mosaics, many of which are still intact almost a millennium later.

The monument to the founders of Kiev - Kiyu, Shchek, Horyv and their sister Lybidi was installed in 1982 in honor of the 1500th anniversary of Kiev in Navodnitsky park near the Paton bridge. The official name of the monument is "Floating Lybid", although most often it is called "a monument to the founders of Kiev" or simply a "boat". Legend has it that princes Kiy, Shchek, Khoryv and their sister Lybid founded a city on the right bank of the Dnieper and named it after their elder brother in Kiev. As Nestor the Chronicler wrote in The Tale of Bygone Years: "And there were three brothers: one, named Kiy, and the other - Shchek, and the third - Horeb and their sister Lybid. Ki was sitting on the mountain, where the descent was now Borichev, and Shchek was sitting on the mountain, which is now called Shchekovitsa, and Khoreb is on the third mountain, which was nicknamed Horyvitsa, and they built the city in the name of their elder brother and called it Kiev. " there is a double of the "boat". A smaller copy of the monument is on the territory of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture on the Ascension descent.
           Goldovsky Aleksandr 6-B

The cathedral is famous for its mosaics and frescos by Byzantine masters that date back to the 11th century. Marvelous frescos decorate walls, pillars and vaults. Inside, the central part of the cathedral is decorated with large mosaic depicting praying Virgin Maria. Some frescos are especially interesting from both historical and artistic points of view, as they represent not only Holy Bible subjects, but also secular ones. For example, in the cathedral one can see portraits of Yaroslav Mudry family members. The belfry is decorated with paintings of the 11th century depicting scenes of the games arranged in Constantinople by Emperor Constantine in honor of Princess Olga. Paintings represent clowns, jugglers, musicians, dancers, animal trainers and chariot races.|Barabolya Katya

Hello! My name is Polina!I live in the country of Ukraine. And today I will talk about a very beautiful place. A steel sculpture of this size was made in the USSR for the first time. It was originally intended to cover the monument with gold leaf, but later it was abandoned. The metal frame was made of stainless steel smelted in Zaporozhye. The sculptor, known in the USSR, the author of a similar monument in Volgograd - Yevgeny Vuchetich, began to work on the statue project.
