El Mirador, Guatamala

Located in the Mirador basin in Guatemala, El Mirador can be found along the northern edge of Guatemala. Deep in the rainforest that has since taken over the site hints of the Mayan culture appear through stilas and buildings with the intricate hiroglyphs that the Mayan people used as writing. It is thought to have been at it's peak during the Late Pre-Classic era or 200 bc - 150 ad.

The Mayan empire created this site before their demise at the hands of Spanish conquistadors.

Loss of habitat and poaching:
The reserve, established in 1990, has lost nearly half of its forests in just the past ten years. The protection afforded by the national park, which was set up at the same time, is marginal at best—it covers only a narrow swath of the northern basin along the Mexico border and includes only 3 or 4 of the 51 ancient Maya cities currently mapped.

Crumbling cities:

Archaeology at El Mirador is often less about bringing the past to light than keeping it from collapsing: Hansen spent three years just stabilizing the walls of La Danta.

Though thought to have been created during the Classical period new evidence if proving otherwise. Pottery and Stone tools that have been dated back to the Late Preclassical era.

to prevent further loss and destruction to this expansive site tourism is needed. This will prevent villagers from logging and poaching in the area as well as help prevent looting.
