The economy is focused on agriculture, which employs 35% of the labor force. Cycles of drought and flooding can lessen production. Important crops include corn, coconut, rice, sugarcane, abaca, and tobacco. Adding to agricultural products, the country exports electronics, minerals, clothing, chemicals, and furniture. Income distribution is not very equal; one-third of the population lives under the poverty line. Economic growth has been slowed by government policies and the emigration of educated and highly skilled Filipinos.

"Philippines." CultureGrams Online Edition. ProQuest, 2013.

The artistic life of the Philippines began a long ago before the Spanish conquest. Early Filipinos carved images of their gods and goddesses and their ancestors in wood. They played a variety of many musical instruments. They celebrated important events with instrumental music, songs, and dances. Painting, sculpture, pottery, and weaving have distinguished from tradition. These artistic forms have been influenced by the West. Bayanihan is the national folk dance company. It consists of theatrical versions of folk dances, and combines Philippine themes with Western techniques.

"Philippines." Britannica School. Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 2013.

People in the Philippines use a jeepney to get around. A jeepney is a like a minibus. They travel on usally fixed routes and hault when waved at from the sidewalk. Theses minibuses carry 10 to 20 passengers for a very small amount of money. Filipinos who don’t have a car or who can’t afford to take a taxi or bus have to walk, ride a bike, or ride some type of animal. When wanting to get from one island to another people usually use a boat or plane to get there.

"Philippines." CultureGrams Kids Edition. ProQuest, 2013.

Although the communications system is generally good, service is not extensive in rural regions and between islands. Middle- class homes have phones if there is service available in the area. There are many televisions and radio stations. Social media is popular and is avaliable to all. Interent access is not restricted. A new cybercrime prevention law is intended to defend users against identity theft and spam.

Many medical professionals emigrate to countries where they can earn much more money, especially the U.S. Many of the poorest Filipinos still need the services of practitioners of traditional medicine and unlicensed midwives. However medicine services are still concentrated in the large cities and are often adequate elsewhere. One problem is the relative of low pay for physicians and nurses.
