Reading about the KIPP Academy also brought to mind the work of Ron Clark and his incredible work with students. I've come to the conclusion that it takes teachers and leaders who also exhibit the strengths of grit, learned optimism, and a growth mindset to teach these traits in children. You have to believe in what you are teaching for others to believe it too. I think the more powerful teaching comes through examples that are personalized to a specific student. It's harder to do but it's worth it! --Maria L

Building Character: On this subject I believe that we need to move away from the old standards of being fair, waiting your turn, etc. because life isn't fair. It creates a falsehood with students in that they need other supports for managing anger, self regulation, etc. We need to prepare students for the future and schools are no longer the everyone sit in a nice row behind a nice desk. There are new challenges that require new ways of preparing students for success in today's learning environments.

Reading Chapter 3 about students playing chess taught me 1) how chess is played :0 and 2) this "game" gives students so much learning in ways I never would have guessed!! ***Think outside of the box ****Keep learning and growing! --Maria L
