For example, 2nd grade's lessons are about kids around the world and how their clothes, houses, foods are different. I align my properties of matter unit to their timing of instruction, and we talk about the different properties of housing materials while testing dog house roofing options.

In trying to understand the geology and geography of Oregon's Willamette Valley, I start with telling the story of Tomanowos. It is a 15-ton meteorite that was revered by the Clackamas people, who named it for the Sky People. Once my students learn that scientists know it didn't land here, their next question is, "Then how did it get here?" And we are naturally launched into uncovering the power of the Missoula Floods.
