The Allied Forces began to plan strategics, analyze logistics, and train in the British Isles for over two years. This invasion was known as the greatest amphibious invasion in history. Many strategies and tactics were used such as specialized landing crafts, effective communication, coordination, supply lines, and the Operation Fortitude. Operation Fortitude was a military deception operation used by the Allied Powers as a façade to be able to build Mulberry Harbors, supply lines. This allows for quick "offloading" of cargo and a safe way to dock ships, soldiers, and imperative supplies needed for the battle.

Artificial harbors, the creation of the Higgins Boat, and heavy bombs were innovations that had a great impact and role during the Normandy Invasion. The Higgins Boat played a great role when it came to facilitating the rapid deployment of troops. This allowed for faster retaliation and constant military pressure in the land of Nazi-occupied France.

Compare this battle to another WWII battle. How did they differ in strategy and impact?

Izzy

Both The Battle of Stalingrad and D-Day were turning points in World War II. One major thing both battles had in common was the use of tanks as a weapon. Also, both battles fought against fascism and imperialism. A major factor that differed in both battles was the combat being used. In Stalingrad the combat used was hand-to-hand combat, however in D-Day it was a massive amphibious surprise invasion.

Maya

D-Day was more of a quick attack by sea and air to take back France. Stalingrad was a long fight in which the Soviets trapped the Germans and stopped them in the East. Both battles were turning points that helped the Allies win the war.

Lexi :

The battle of Stalin started in 1942 to 1943 while D-day started later in the war in June of 1944 and ending in that same year a month later.

What were the key objectives for each side?

The battle of Normandy started in 1944 and took place in Normandy. The battle was between the armed forces (Germany and Italy) and the Allied Forces (The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada). The objective of the armed forces was to gain control over northern parts of France and the allied forces wanted to secure a key location

How did geography, resources, and alliances influence the battle?

Both of the forces wanted to gain access to Normandy. The geography of the battle bought opportunities and challenges, the allied powers choose Normandy because it was less fortified then Pas-de-Calais because the germans assumed they would not attack in Normandy. The allied powers had around 39,000 vehicle resources.

D-Day was a turning point in WWII because it helped the Allies start taking control back of Europe from Nazi Germany. Before D-Day most of Europe was under German control and the Nazis were committing dreadful crimes as in the Holocaust.

The D-Day success pushed Germans back which led to the Liberation of France and eventually defeated Nazi Germany. If D-Day failed, the war would've lasted many more years, giving Hitler more time to strengthen his attacks. D-Day was a very risky operation but it immensely changed the war ending and helped get victory for the Allies.

Primary Source Quote:

"German machine-gunners mowed down hundreds of Allied soldiers before they ever got off the landing boats onto the Normandy beaches."

-
