The only reason the "bikini" was invented was beause they had to cut the midriff of one peice swimsuits due to the lack of fabric.

It had a cup shape top in the middle and the a flat plate type shape around it. the top cup was often covered with a long peice of fabric and sometimes topped often with a bow or even flowers.
