The intersection of population change and environmental sustainability could happen when climate change itself affects population changes or when population changes affect climate change although the latter statement does have its own problems when it comes to global overall population change.

Migrations that contribute to the increase of developed nations, such Europe also contributes to environment footprints. While migration is considered as a sensitive political topic, migration to developed countries has a potential to increase environmental footprints due to a high unstainable consumption level. Consumption levels in countries like the US or densely populated European nations have a significant role of contributing to huge amounts of ecological footprint. This habit of using significant amounts of recourses can impact the environment negatively. To add to this, there are evidence that suggests that future population growth as a result of immigrations to developed countries in Europe has a potential to make achieving the European Union's climate goals more difficult due to the increase of consumption level.

Population growth could be seen as one of the factors as to why environmental sustainability could be threatened. This is also true in urban areas where more and more people are moving and settling there. This could cause a problem as it leads to congestion and more harmful carbons to be released in just one day. In addition, the asphalts that are used to build the roads and streets as a response to solve the congestion also plays a role in the rising temperature in urban cities with its ability to absorb heat, leading to more usage of air conditioners.

However, the union of concerned scientists believes that not only is blaming population growth for climate change wrong, it can also be dangerous for both people and the climate itself. It is stated that 50% of carbon emissions comes from the richest 10% countries of the world and that the correlation between growing climate change and population growth does not entirely mean that population growth causes climate change. As most of the population growth happens in developing countries, people there usually get blamed for the environmental degradation that happens although they themselves do not or have little contribution to climate change itself as most of the people there have very low to subsistence-level of consumption.
