Grace has suffered from depression most of her life and openly sings and talks about her gender dysphoria. She is very vocal about her dislike of the government and the criminal justice system after being a victim of police brutality. She started singing in cafes and karaoke bars until she was finally discovered at the age of 16. She has crossed seamlessly over the pop genre and won the female artist of the decade award. She was born in Pennsylvania Philadelphia on April 7th 1915 however, she grew up in Baltimore during the Roaring Twenties, a time of culture, music, and jazz. In her early teens, she spent much of her time and energy singing songs by Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong until 1929 when her mother moved to New York where Holiday followed soon after. Her first record was with a studio group led by Benny Goodman and in 1935 Holiday’s reign began; she created hit after hit, and continued to do so until her unfortunate and untimely demise in 1959. Despite her lack of formal training, her voice and sheer talent was a blessing for all listeners and will be remembered as a musical genius. My personal favorite song of hers would have to be “Strange Fruit;” the song was inspired by a poem written by Abel Meeropol. Much like the poem, the song speaks out against the lynchings of African-Americans that were all too common during her time and became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement.
