We know that we were not the first people of this land, I live on the Kulin nation's land. There were 25 different clans that were part of the Kulin nation world who all spoke wadawurrung language. The Kulin nation people would use nature made landmarks to set up their boundaries, such as mountains, streams, and rivers, one of the rivers was the Werribee river where I base my chosen place to connect to the Kulin nation's land and people. The different clans would all believe in Bunjil or Waa, they would marry only the opposite if they were bunjil they could on marry from a Waa clan. The werribee river is the place I picked from assessment 1 and the feeling of peaceful and I zone into hearing the water as it runs over the rocks moving downstream, it was not windy, so the sound of the trees was not high, the bird sounds always change from different birds. Standing there looking around seeing the trees that had fallen in the water, and one thing I noticed was that there was a lot of rubbish, which made me sad looking at the rubbish that was stuck around the trees.

I decided to organised to take my children down to the river on weekend, I made sure I checked the weather to made sure it wasn’t too wet, I knew it was hard for me to get down and getting an 18-month (about 1 and a half years) old and 8-year-old down there would be a mission. Jaxon went down the hill well and Evie slid down on her bottom like a nature slide, Jaxon set of exploring the area and water climbing rocks and standing in the water on a rock he told me that he was ‘fishing, and going to catch a fish to cook for dinner’, with his stick he had found, this made me think that this would be something that the Kulin nation people would have done to gather food for their dinner for their clan.

Evie did not explore much just touching the rocks that had Mose on it and would point to the water and say “water.” Jaxon noticed that there was a tree that has fallen in the water, there were rocks, water, and one thing I noticed last time I was there was he said, “there is a lot of rubbish, and we should bring a bag next time to clean up the rubbish.”

Just watching the children move around the space and talk about it made me think of the possibility of playing and imagination in a small space, from a nature playground or nature obstacle course, or fishing with a stick, when gathering nature items made me think of a nature treasure hunt finding different items around the place.

I would really like to be focuses on the word the indigenous people say in their ‘Welcome to country’ we take a leaf, and we are welcome to everything on the land from the roots of the earth to the tops of the trees but ask to nurture it as their ancestors did. In the Centre teaching the children about respecting the land and continuing to take care of it. Instead on doing embedding indigenous prospective through just finger paint, go beyond that and really look at thing we can do to help give back to the land and what the owners on the land believe in, like planting trees on national tree day or speaking to the council and finding out if we can plant trees in the park, or clean up the parks or local communities by going for a walk and picking up rubbish.

I brought this play back to my Centre where I work, showing the children ages 3-6 years of age the video of the place, we went to ask them if they could tell me what they could see tree, water, rocks, and leaves. Then I asked them what they could hear, all they could hear was water. I told the children that they went on a nature treasure hunt, and this is what they found at the river. The children were amazed. I asked them if they would like to play a nature treasure hunt.

We went outside; the children gathered all different things like leaves, sticks and rocks. They really moved around the whole yard to look for different things and were excited to show me all the things they found. We put a tub on the table for them to place what they found in there.
