Dear diary,
The trip took us to the Andromeda Galaxy. It is our closest neighbour, and scientists think it will bump into our own galaxy one day. If you look up at the sky on a clear night, you might be able to see a bright smudge in the sky; it looks like a star with a cloud around it. That's the Andromeda Galaxy, a collection of stars and planets just like our own galaxy, the Milky Way. But the Andromeda Galaxy is so far away that the light you're seeing today took 2.5 million years to travel to Earth. That's really far! For comparison, light from the moon only takes about 1 second to reach us, and light from the sun takes about 8 minutes. So the Andromeda Galaxy is much further away than the moon or the sun. Even though it's that far away, the Andromeda Galaxy is still the Milky Way's closest neighbour. Andromeda is home to over 1 trillion stars. That’s over at least two times more stars than the Milky Way.
