2)The Importance of the Legal Guide Topic:
        a. Student Suspension delays students’ route to graduation and can have lasting impacts. When students are suspended from a university they are required to withdraw from their courses and unable to register for courses until they serve their suspension term. A suspension term can either be a semester or year depending on the university policy. Student suspension can also impact the student’s ability to graduate as student may have to move academic catalog years which may require them to take additional course if their degree plan has been changed. This is impacting the filed of higher education as students are transferring institutions in which it prevents students from graduating in a timely manner if the transfer institutions do not take all the courses previously taken.

3)Best Practices:
       a. Explain to the students the impacts of being suspended from a university.
        b. Reviewing the possibility for an appeal of suspension.
        c. Use of an Early Alerting System to make students aware of their semester projected grades.

4) Emerging Issue:
a. In the current environment students are no longer dependent on a four-year degree unless they are going into the STEM field. As a result, often times when they are suspended, they will not return to the university as they have started another degree or career plan since leaving the university. This is something to keep in mind as students are placed on probation and show signs of continuing towards suspension.

It discuss that although reaching out to students may be an effective way of reaching out to a wide group of students it has not yielded results as compared to more intrusive efforts (Advising sessions). The reason for this is that students are able to understand their shortfalls and resources needed to overcome them through meeting with faculty/staff members.

In this instance although the students did something wrong they were not allowed to present their case prior to being listed on probation. Furthermore, another case described in the article covers that a university did reach out to a student in regards to being placed on probation but did not provide instructions on how to follow-up or present their case. The article then describes that placing a student on probation/suspension without a hearing is a violations of their due process.

The student described in the situation was on academic probation and the staff member feared that the student would not return to the university if suspended. Once the staff member reached out to the student it was realized they overly worked to support their family which was causing their academics to suffer. Once they staff member was able to provide resources to the student to take on less work hours they were able to improve their grades. However, not every instance is like this it is also discussed that students will leave the university of their own accord but due to not having communication with university members they decide never to come back.

In my instance I was able to appeal an instance in which I was going to be suspended for the following semester and allowed to continue my education without having to take a semester off. Through the NACADA code of ethics I understand know why my academic advisors at the time reached out to me when I was on academic probation in order to avoid being placed on academic suspension. 
     
1.1.Due to these laws being in place I was able to continue my education and as a result I am grateful for the ability to appeal my suspension. 

1.2.Now working on the other side of higher education I am making it my goal to work with students who are in danger of falling into suspension to work with them to maintain good standing.

1.3.I will also be sure to let my coworkers know the importance of understanding and explaining university policy to our student so they are aware of their rights when it comes to their education.

2.     When students are at risk of being placed on suspension actively communicate with them to get a better understanding of what may be causing their issues.

3.     Create an early alert system in which instructors can reach out to campus partners (Advising, Career Center, Tutoring Center) for assistance in working with students. 

4.     To be legally in compliance create a process that can be done across the university to ensure all steps are followed when working with students who will be suspended from the university in order to avoid infringing on a student right to Due Process.

5.     If students that are on probation decide to take a semester off create a communication plan in order to ensure all students who wish to continue their education understand how to re-enroll or the necessary steps to take once ready to take classes again. 

6.     Ensure that students sign an acknowledgment form for courses they are taking that they understand cheating/plagiarism goes against the university mission and honorary code and they may be reprimanded if they are found responsible of such actions.
