I have 2 VERY happy kiddos. My Kindergartener in Mrs. Minick's class is absolutely THRIVING and loves EVERYTHING about school. He loves the letter days, centers, sings songs he learns in music, and loves the cafeteria food! He looks forward to school each day and comes running out with a giant smile behind his (much appreciated) mask. Our 5th grader is also thriving! It was not easy to keep our child motivated and focused. Since the in-person school started our family’s life is happier and relaxed. Our 3rd grader loves to go to school. She improved her social skills and is learning how to talk to her peers all over again. We are able to cut the screen time down to pediatricians-recommended two hours a day which is so important for child’s development. If the school would not open, she would have never think to teach her classmates about her favorite sport or plan a pool party. She would turn her energy inward and suffer depression. Children learn not just from textbooks, but also from interaction with other people. Sometimes assigning a small task to students, for example making him or her a Teacher’s Helper for a day, could set them on a path of confidence for the rest of the life. Three cheers for pencils and no longer hearing my now third grader ask Siri how to spell a word. The reduction of iPad time also means a calmer kid at home. We had a wonderful teacher last year who made virtual learning as easy as it could be but my daughter keeps remarking how nice it is that her teacher is looking at her and not the screen.
