Missouri Illegal Voters voted for a Pro-Slavery government in November 29th 1854

Senator David Atchison of Missouri led 1,700 men from Missouri into Kansas to illegally vote for Kansas to be a pro-slavery state. Known as Border Ruffians, the would threaten to shoot, burn, or hang people who opposed slavery

Many came from Missouri to vote for pro-slavery by March 1855

5000 men came from Missouri into Kansas to illegally vote for the election. Anti-slavery settlers were outvoted despite having the majority because of the pro-slavery Missouri forces. Resulted in 36 pro-slavery delegates and 3 anti-slavery delegates

In October 1855, anti-slavery residents made a free state constitution

Anti-slavery residents constructed a anti-slavery constitution and elected their own governor and state legislature in Topeka Kansas. This resulted in the territory having 2 governments.

May 21st, 1856, pro-slavery forces rode to Lawrence, Kansas to arrest the anti-slavery leaders.

After Judge Samuel Lecompte demanded that the pro-slavery government be charged with treason. In response, a group of 800 pro-slavery men to Lawrence and destroyed two newspapers offices . They also burned and ransacked houses and shops and shot down the Free State Hotel with a cannon.

May 24th, 1856, James Brown led his band armed.

James Brown was anti-slavery and very upset with the Sack of Lawrence. He and his band rode into Pottawatomie Creek armed with rifles, knives, and broadswords and stormed the houses. He and his band dragged many victims out of houses and sliced their heads off.

Slavery supporters took their turn by December 1856

Senator Charles Sumner gave his speech on May 19th 1856

Charles Sumner was an Abolitionist and the leader of the Republican party at the time. He gave his speech called "The Crime Against Kansas" which highlighted all the events that have happened, especially the ones led by the pro-slavery residents. He also talked badly about Senator Andrew Butler of South Carolina.

May 22nd, Representative Preston Brooks stuck down Sumner

Preston Brooks of South Carolina did not like Sumners speech at all. He was a distant cousin of Butler and sought to take his revenge. He entered Sumners chamber where he was working and struck him with his gold cane repetitively. The cane shattered due to the blows Sumner took.

January 29th 1861, Kansas was elected into the Union as a free state

With all the chaos enduring in Kansas, congress decided to take over. The violence finally ended when the United States elected Kansas as a free state into the Union.
