Maddy is at the Great house because miss Ellen, Miss Martha's daughter , is teaching him to read. Maddy already understands that he is black and a slave until the magical day of freedom. He is smarter because he has learned as well as Beverly and Harriet. Miss Martha's worst fear is that all the guests would figure out the truth about Maddy's family. mama decides it's ok for Maddy to learn to read because no one can take it away from him. Edith gives him a hard look, and he asks her if he can help in the kitchen. he picks the beans in the kitchen, and realizes that he got out of work not because he was Sally's son but for being Jefferson's. He decided theentences were to complicated. Beverly Uncle, and him talked about Slavery.<br>"Government rules&nbsp; by content of the people."&nbsp; meaning that slavery isn't a government, and if it was, they could get rid of it. James and Maddy decided to save up enough money to free themselves and Peter. Maddy worries Papa is going to die before he is twenty-one. He trusts mama, not Jefferson<br><br><br><br>One evening dinner, a guest stares at Beverly and Maddy and at T.J. Maddy realizes how that they looked like T.J. The guest is shocked. Maddy asks what Beverly will say when he is 21,, what is he going to tell people about his parents when he is twenty-one. A black who doesn't follow the rules is a dangerous man in the eyes of white people. A black person who doesn't follow the rules doesn't live a long time. He tells Beverly that he needs to be white inside and out. "Don't you ever tell."<br><br><br>Maddy's turning point is when he cuts his hand on the saw. Master Jefferson takes care of him; He sends for the doctor who gives him stitches. Life at Poplar Forest is different because jeff has a secret side where he acts like the father of his two sons.
