According to this textbook being gay means having a "sexual preference" and the only people in the LGBTQ+ community are gay men and lesbians. Movements advocating marriage equality for gay men and lesbians is prioritized while the struggle for trans rights imply isn't mentioned. The textbook wants you to know the laws that restricted gay marriage and how those laws were eventually repealed.

While other parts of the textbook mention specific icons of different movements, going into detail about what they did for their communities these sections maybe 1 person. This text gives no specifics about who was behind the movement making the fight for LGBTQ+ rights more obscure. There is no discussion of intersectionality and the role people of color played in the gay liberation movement. Being gay doesn't put you into one box, if you're gay and white your whiteness doesn't go away and if you're gay and a person of color, being gay isn't going to protect you from being discriminated against by gay white people. Anyone from any walk of life can be gay, but this textbook makes it seem as though if you were gay that was the one category you fit under and there weren't other dimensions to your life.

The actors that appear to be driving the overall discussion in this part of the textbook are white cishet people. They represent no part of the LGBTQ+ community and gloss over much of the important history, exposing their ignorance.

There simply isn't enough detail about anything in this section of the textbook, there is no mention of people crucial to the movement, it doesn't connect the movement to any other civil rights movements in the past, doesn't address intersectionality within the community and doesn't mention anyone besides gay men and lesbians. The textbook needs more context and this section needs to be written by someone who's actually a part of the community so sexuality isn't written off as a preference or something you can choose.

I found it interesting that 5/7 sections on homosexuality throughout history mentioned AIDS, even in a section when I wouldn't have expected it. I also found it interesting that the LGBTQ+ community was only represented by gay men and lesbians, which showed how uninformed the views on the community was at the time of writing the textbook

I think the textbook did well discussing topics such as Stonewall and the effects that the rise of AIDS had on the community, but that was it. The struggle for equal rights for same-sex relationships had a lot more than just AIDS, Stonewall, and the military. It feels like there's so much missing when it comes to this history

The textbook feels like it's only mentioning the movement and not teaching it. When learning about movements, it's important to know the people behind the movement. Who are some influential people who ushered in gay rights? What organizations? These questions that are left unanswered SHOULD be included in the text

The thing is, I don't know much about my own community to even know what should be included, but that shouldn't be the case. I know that there is much missing, especially since there are only 7 sections that are listed in the index. The lack of information just shows how undervalued the history of homosexuality is.
