The person who gave Jonas the assignment. It shows that things can be a lie. This is said to Jonas and it helps him come to terms that is his world can be a lie. Changing Jonas’s perspective of the world. Like whether he can lie or if his family has lied. In the story it is turning the world from a Utopian to a dissipation land. That he can lie to people about his life what he does or things like that. So he doesn't say the way things were. This reveals that the world is built on lies to keep them safe but take away things that make them individuals. I see this because you can never know when a person is lying to you. That is scary both in the book and the real world. This quote is from chapter 8 and it means that you can tell lies. You can tell something not true. The significance of this is that it could mean that people are telling him something not true. The mood is sad because that could mean that his whole life is a lie. It is important because it changes Jonas world and shows that in our world things can sometimes be gray not black but not white. The quote means that he can say something not true. It had no impact on my thoughts.

Please Grade this copy.

Jonas’s instructions said this. It was said to Jonas as a instruction for his future job. The purpose of this statement was to help him with his training. He could lie about his training, any dreams he had, or how his day went. Jonas is reading his instructions after the ceremony of twelve. He is in his room reading his instructions alone. He would read them with no one else because no one else got these instructions. The quote means that in a Utopian society where lying is forbidden, he is aloud to. This truly shows how unique his job is and will later affect his character, and the theme. This quote means a lot. In hard situation it is nice to lie so you don’t have to explain everything. The idea of lying is common for most people. The quote “You may lie.” came from Jonas’s instructions for his job. Others got thick but his was very thin, indicating his job was unique. In other words “You may lie.” might describe just how important his job really is. The author is trying to make us see how this will affect the book later on. How this might make the story go in a different direction. How this might mean Jonas really is special. This story had a significant impact on my thinking about our future. Our world future scares me.

This is the final copy

Jonas’ instructions for his occupation said the quote “you may lie.” It is said to Jonas because he has special purposes related to his job. Jonas is reading his instructions and it is the 8th and last rule in his folder. It means that Jonas may break a community rule which is to not ever lie, but now with his new career he may. It reveals that in the future of the book he may be in a circumstance where he has to lie, such as when he and his family unit are talking about their dreams he says that he did not have dreams even though he had one that was related to his assignment. It means that Jonas is allowed to be dishonest. In real life I see that many people lie about things a lot. Jonas’s career instructions said the quote: “You may lie” when Jonas was reading his rules for his job. In other words it told Jonas that he was allowed to not tell the truth at times. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas has special permissions that are different than everyone else because he has a special job as the new Receiver. This quote is important because it is related to future things in the book. Some real world things are that people lie and it is not uncommon for people to lie. Many people lie about small things but some people lie about things that should not be lied about such as if someone committed a big crime and they are explaining it to officials. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how Jonas will decide things in future of the book and what the consequences will be.

A doctor has to keep their patients information classified because it is their personal life and tehy might not want everybody knowing what medical problems and stuff like that they have. When Jonas was looking through the rules of the job the Giver he noticed the line"You may lie". In other words he cannot tell anyone about his job or else he will get released from his unit.

In the rule book that the giver has given to Jonas he saw that he was able to lie but he didn’t know if he was able to lie to the giver because he accidentally gave Gabriel the memory of the two boats one a nice sunny day and he was worried that they would release Gabriel or that he would get released from the giver job and decided to keep it a secret from the giver.

That it’s OK to lie and that Jonas was afraid of losing his assignment as the receiver.
The author is trying to let use know that Jonas has a different lifestyle from everyone else because he has the memory of ancient history he learns about pain, and happiness, and loneliness, and he experienced cold weather, and hot weather etc. But he has a important job and he can’t tell anyone about his day as well.

This quote is important because lying is a important thing in the world because everyone needs their privacy because they have things they don’t want anyone to know because if it was a secret and you tell anyone then it wouldn't be a secret anymore.

The quote was in the rules of becoming a receiver of memories. It is said to Jonas.
During this part in the story Jonas was being chosen to be a receiver of memories. The quote means that if you need to lie in any situation whether it involves something that might injure someone or keep the truth from someone, you are not forced to tell the truth when you are in a conversation. It reveals that there might be conflict throughout the story if the characters lie about the wrong thing and it gets them into trouble, either with a friend or family member, someone in the community, or with an Elder or the Giver. When I see this quote the ideas in my head that i see in this world is that, people who don’t thoroughly understand the quote or the meaning of the quote that someone might get into trouble or do something bad that doesn’t help anyone. When you lie it could either be good or bad, if someone isn’t in the right emotional space to handle something like a death and somebody lies about it, the person they kept that from might not handle it well and not understand what you were trying to do for them and might handle the death worse than they had before they knew. The quote that comes out of the story is “You may lie.” Jonas is the one who is reading the rules out of the rulebook or guidelines when you become a Receiver of Memories. The quote is “You may lie.” Jonas was reading the list of rules for the job of the Receiver of Memories. The author is trying to make us see that lying can make many different situations in the world. If you don’t think about what your lying about you might hurt someone or help them, I think he was trying to make the reader make connections to think before you lie, to make it be like you can think ahead before you lie and what might happen for your choice if you lie or you don’t.
This quote is important because it might help you realize that you should think before you lie, think about what might happen in the future, the responses the person you lie or you don’t lie to would say or think of some changes that might happen if you tell the truth or hide it. The real world connections that can be made are that you need to be careful about what choices you make in life, think of it as almost saying “Think before you speak.”

The "you may lie" quote is from The Giver. The giver of memories said “You may lie” . It is said to Jonas and the purpose of it is he is telling him it is okay to lie about what happens at your job. In the book the community is not allowed to lie except certain people like the Elders, or the receiver and giver of memories. The quote was said when it was Jonas’s first day at work. The giver said the exact words “You can lie”. He also was reading over the rules and when he did he was saying that line over and over in his head and mumbling it and going over and over it. I think the reason this is a big deal is lying is not good in that community and everyone was taught not to lie. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about lying and I think it is okay to lie in certain situations because maybe you are protecting someone or you are in a situation that is not that big.

When Jonas was looking through the rules of the job the Giver he noticed the line "You may lie". In other words he cannot tell anyone about his job or else he will get released from his unit. i think the Giver is trying to tell the people that read this his job is important and it should be a secret that makes him able to lie about anything that has to do with it. the reason why I believe this is because he is not even allowed to talk about his dreams or feelings because it might reveal his job. the reason why this quote is important is because it holds together the secret about the Giver. nobody besides the Giver and on-coming givers should know how they do what they do. one application is when your working at a place that is top secret that nobody can know about, or when you cannot share information about your job or anything that has to do with your job. this story impacted how I thought about being isolated all of you life or not being able to know what emotional and physical pain is, being able to see colors, and see the different seasons of the year. Before I read this story I thought that it wouldn't really suck. Now that I have read this story I would hate to not be able to see and feel all of those things because it would be really weird waking up in the morning just throwing on some close and not knowing what they look like, or just even not being able to play in the snow with my real family that actually gave birth to me.

“You may lie” is a quote from The Giver. Jonas, the main character is assigned the job of The Receiver, which is the most respected job in the community. When you are assigned a job, you get rules or instructions. His rules in particular are very special, he is allowed to do things the others in the community aren’t. For example, everyone in the community is not allowed to lie, on the other hand Jonas and The Giver are allowed to. Another example, every morning in every dwelling they have the telling of dreams, and in his rules/instructions he his not allowed to tell his family about his dreams. The giver said this to jonas because the Giver wrote the rules. And i believe that the purpose of him saying this is because Jonas is so used to telling his family everything, but the things The Giver shares with Jonas are things no one else can ever know.
This reveals about the characters that no one lies, And that he is allowed to lie and it revealed that he is special and he gets to withhold information. When the quote “You may lie” is mentioned in the story, it’s when all the twelves are assigned their jobs and Jonas waits until he gets home to read. What i think this quote means is that Jonas is allowed to withhold things so that he can protect people from knowing the great pain the memories hold. I see this idea in the world when you lie to protect someone you care about.

The rule book stated that Jonas could lie. This happens when jonas got his assignment he opened his folder and his sheet of rules states that “you may lie”. This quote means that jonas could lie to his family, friends, teachers even the committee. This reveals that nobody lies in the community except for Jonas and the giver. What this quote means to me is like an advantage because no one else in the community can. In our world today almost everyone i know has lied before if its something small to something in court. Jonas opened his folder and the last rule was you can lie. Jonas and the giver are the only people who can lie. They can lie to their parents, teachers and even the committee of elders. This makes me realize that lying can be good or bad. I think this quote is important because in the story everyone knows everything about you no secrets at all. Sometimes you have to lie like for your safety.

Jonas' paper just had eight rules. some of the rules were I quote, " 4. Do not discuss your training with any members of the community, including parents and Elders. 5. From this moment you are prohibited from dream-telling. 6. Except for illness or injury unrelated to your training, do not apply for medication. 7. You may not apply for release. 8. You may lie.” These are some reasons he cannot lie. Not telling dreams he can just say he had none even though that was usually the case for Jonas. He cannot discuss training like the rest of people. You may lie can also be a reason to lie, for if someone asks I think your you can say no even if you did lie. He can say that he took the pill that he supposedly needs for his stirrings. Lying is something everyone does for reasons that only they and possibly a few others know. Jonas can lie to leave the community like saying I'm going home and just straight up leaving town after stealing the leftover food like he eventually does but in the morning when everyone else is asleep.

Once Jonas had been chosen as the receiver of memory he was given a folder of all the rules one being “you may lie”. I think one of the purposes is so that none of the receiver of memory secrets get out. Also this allows Jonas more freedom.
In other words Jonas and the giver can now lie so he is wondering if anyone else in the community can too. So he has to be careful of who he lies to, and also not to get anything leaked.
The author is trying to make us see that Jonas has been given freedom to choose what he want to say even if it’s a lie. This may cause conflict if Jonas decides to lie in important situations like in court or to the giver.
Think this quote is important to keep the community safe from the harmful memories and the receiver secrets. When I think of you may lie I think of when you turn 18 and you have the freedom to go anywhere, just like how Jonas can now choose to lie. When I read this passage, I thought about how weird this concept was for Jonas and it was surprising that he was now allowed to lie when he had grown up being taught never to lie. I also thought about what it would feel like to live where Jonas and his family unit have lived there their whole life, being isolated, over protected and having an extremely easy lifestyle, with no pain or economical issues.

This quote is really important because in this society no one can lie or you will be punished. He has a exception of doing that without being punished because it is in his rules it says that he can do that. If someone had told me that I can lie, I think that I would take full advantage of this and do as much as I can. I think that if our world was like Jonas's we would never know when someone had the opportunity to lie. This had an impact on my thinking about this story because I had to put myself in Jonas's place and realize that if I live in a place like he does no one would know if I was lying. You would grow up learning and knowing that lying is very bad and you will get a consequence for it. Reading this rule if it were me i would be shock as Jonas was.

Everyone else can't lie because there job isn't secretive. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about Jonas and the Giver because they are the only one who can lie and all of the other people can’t. In the real world everyone lie, everyone is not that truthful.

The quote means you can lie, it reveals that Jonas can lie to anyone whenever he wants about his job. Jonas is shocked by this because before his job he was never allowed to lie, so Jonas is nervous about what he will be doing for his job. The quote means to me that you can lie anytime you want, I see this idea in the world being a bad thing because I think people will take advantage of this ability, but I think it is OK if you are lying about something small. The quote “You May Lie” is important because are world has so much problems, people are hungry some people don’t have jobs, but were Jonas lives there are no problems. They call it sameness, now he has a job that tells him all the bad things and all the differences. So Jonas has to lie to make sure no one finds out about these things he will soon find out about. If someone came up to you in our world and said “You May Lie” that would not mean anything to us in this world because you already can lie and most people do lie.

Speaker and Audience:Who said this? Who is it said to and what is the purpose?
The Community of Elders said this to Jonas. They said it through the rules for his new assignment. One of his rules was “You May Lie” and Jonas repeats this to himself. Jonas also takes this into depth by seeing if everybody gets this privilege when they get their rules.

Context:What is happening in the story when it is being said?
The current time that this prompt is taking place is when Jonas becomes a new 12. With becoming 12 he gets the honor of becoming the “Receiver of Memory”and a list of rules regarding his new assignment. In his list of rules, one of his rules states that he may lie.

Significance:What does the quote mean? What does it reveal about the characters/conflict/theme?
This quote means that somebody in a perfect society finds out it's not so perfect. When Jonas receives his assignment one of his rules for this assignment was “You May Lie”. This is so surprising and frightening to Jonas because at his school he was taught so strictly to not lie. This affects Jonas because he now can figure out things he could have never even imagine.

Connections: What does this quote mean to you? How do you see this idea in the world?
I think that you should be able to lie if something personal was on the line. An example of this would be not telling your guardian about something that happened at school. Another situation I think that you should be able to lie is when a good friend tells you a secret and somebody else asks about it. Some cases that you shouldn't lie about is when your in court or being interviewed by cops or swat. The last casinario that you shouldn't lie in is something that happened in your life and you try to cover it up. I think that you should be able to tell lies because it can make you feel more secure. But I wouldn't let people abuse this gift.

When the quote was read by Jonas, "You may lie" he was in shock because most of his people in his community can never lie. Sometimes Jonas would feel guiltily of himself and other times he would think people in this community would lie too. Ever since Jonas received his assignment from the Ceremony of Twelve, it changed his life. In this community it doesn't matter if you lie, they are very strict. If you lie you will get released and what if mean getting released is getting killed, But in other societies people will say "It's okay to lie" and you won't be punished for that.

The quote you may lie is a right given to the receiver. When Jonas first read the rules made from the giver, he was surprised meaning that Jonas has never lied ever before. He read this from his rules meaning it is a rule that he has the ability to lie, so Jonas is left wondering when he should lie. Such as if he should tell the truth of how he is feeling the responsibility. Sense the author is trying to tell us if they have the ability to lie then, Jonas has the feeling of being the only one to have the ability to lie. Out of the whole community Jonas might be the only person who got the ability to lie.

The quote "You may lie" was said to Jonas by the giver. the purpose of this quote is to make sure that Jonas does not tell anyone about his job, it is all meant be be kept a secret.when Jonas gets home from the ceremony of twelve he starts getting ready for bed and then reads through the rules for his future job. the quote could possibly mean that he is able to lie about his job so that nobody finds out about what he does for his job as the Giver. one thing that has revealed about jonas' character is that he is not as trustworthy as he used to be. to me this quote means you can lie if it means keeping your job and yourself from danger or in joinas' case keeping your job because it is top classified. i see this idea in the real world when you have to keep secrets that are very important from somone who is close to you. one other example is when you are working as a doctor.
