Children who learn to trust caregivers in infancy will be more likely to form trusting relationships with others throughout the course of their lives. While going through this stage at about 18 months, I know that being able to have physical contact with someone you trust as well as recognize is key at this stage. In our text book, it states, " In early childhood, parents who support their children's emotional responses, perhaps by actively soothing an upset child rather than ignoring an outburst, are more likely to have socially competent children." This proves the point that at such a young age, you can't ignore the needs of children. I know that at age 18 months, I was very comfortable with my mother, upset when she couldn't meet my needs, and expecting her to know what I wanted.

Autonomy vs shame and guilt

Autonomy vs. shame and doubt is the stage in which a child learns to be independent and make their own decisions in life. At this stage you are about 2 and are eager to explore the world. You can finally make some decisions on your own and a sense of responsibility. While I was in this stage, I would always want the independence of being able to pick out my own outfits and choose the things I liked. I loved getting my own snack, or pouring my own glass of water. In the text it states, " Emotion regulation has behavioral and academic consequences." Being able to regulate behavior and still have consequences can lead to great growth.

Initiative vs Guilt

This stage occurs during the preschool years, between the ages of 3 and 5. During the initiative versus guilt stage, children begin to assert their power and control over the world through directing play and other social interactions. While going through this stage, you usually begin forming friendships and being able to assert yourself above others if needed. Embarrassment comes along with this stage. Being at such a tough stage, I learned social skills and learned them very quickly. When you are socially aware you are less likely to get embarrassed. In the text it states, " While children become better at identifying and understanding emotions with age, some children lag behind, and this can cause social and behavioral issues." This demonstrates the idea of social awareness being an issue. Being able to mature yet still have an imagination was a fun stage of life.

During the stage of industry vs. inferiority, a child is learning new skills. When they productively navigate this stage, they feel useful and develop a sense of self-worth. If they fail, they feel inferior. While usually at this age you are approaching early middle school, there are a lot more expectations. The bar is set higher and you are set to higher standards. In the text it states, " Emotional self regulation is voluntary and control of emotions, attention, and behavior. Children get better at this with age." Having self control usually arises around end of middle school and I can recall one time I was in full control of my emotions throughout middle school.

Identity vs Confusion

As they transition from childhood to adulthood, teens may begin to feel confused or insecure about themselves and how they fit into society. As they seek to establish a sense of self, teens may experiment with different roles, activities, and behaviors. According to Erikson, this is important to the process of forming a strong identity and developing a sense of direction in life. As I am actively in this stage there comes stress as well as lots of joy. The freedom and the feeling of growing up makes life so joyful. As a teenager, I go through a lot of disagreements and doubts. But staying true to myself is most important. In the text it states, " Children must learn their value in society." Being able to know your place and truly advance forward is very important. Getting my license was a huge accomplishment.

Intimacy vs isolation

The major conflict at this stage of life centers on forming intimate, loving relationships with other people. Success at this stage leads to fulfilling relationships. Struggling at this stage, on the other hand, can result in feelings of loneliness and isolation. No one wants to be alone. Longing for someone to love is what is hard to not stress or obsess over. Knowing that it all going to work out is something most adults can not grasp on to. Weather it's seeing my parents happy and in love or seeing my divorced grandparents all love when you get older is bittersweet. At this stage in my life I will imagine I will be having a life, a family, and a stable career. Committing to a family. But if fail, depression may occur and eventually lead to a mid-life crisis.

Generativity vs Stagnation

In simple term, this stage is most like giving back to the world. Reflecting what you can do to give back to the world. During this stage, middle-aged adults strive to create or nurture things that will outlast them, often by parenting children or fostering positive changes that benefit others. Contributing to society and doing things to promote future generations are important needs at the generativity vs. stagnation stage of development. My parents love to donate and give to the underprivileged. My aunt is not as wealthy and yearly we assist them in buying Christmas presents. They are to the age where that stuff is what they have worked their whole lives for. A reflection stage is approaching and the focus is better yourself.

At each stage of psychosocial development, people are faced with a crisis that acts as a turning point in development. Successfully resolving the crisis leads to developing a psychological virtue that contributes to overall psychological well-being. At the integrity versus despair stage, the key conflict centers on questioning whether or not the individual has led a meaningful, satisfying life. Looking back on life and reflecting on the good they have done is the final stage. One might say, " Did I full fill my dreams and live a true life?" Having the ability to watch my grandparents go through this allows me to believe they have lived their fullest life. Without being content I will be very anxious about the choices in life that I made.
