In the mid 1800s a big number, and it was getting bigger, of both  black and white people were against slavery. These people thought that the only way to end slavery was to promote the idea of "liberty and equality for all". Slavery ended in the North in the early 1800s. Many people were involved in this cause.
            The first person that was involved in helping this cause was William Garrison. He was a vocal abolitionist and publisher of the newspaper The Liberator. Another person that was involved in this cause was Frederick Douglass. He was an escaped slave that lectured against slavery and quickly became a leader in the movement. In 1847 he started his own newspaper called the North Star. The last person that I am going to talk about, but not the last person that was involved, is Harriet Tubman. During this time period not many kids went to school because of cost. People that supported this cause believed that everyone should get education. This cause was lead by one main person but he had help and supporters. This person was Horace Mann.
Horace Mann latter received the nickname "father of American public schools" for his hard work. Mann serviced as the head of the state board of education in Massachusetts. He spoke to many people about the importance of education. Many reformer saw education as a way of solving problems. Some of these problems include problems in society, such as poverty and crime. The citizens of Massachusetts voted to pay taxes to build better schools, to pay higher salaries to teachers, and open places where you can train people to become teachers. Even though public schools were popping up all over the country, not every child got a chance to go to school.
