Exploring different op shops

After visiting many different op shops I decided to go back to the first op shop that I went to which is the one that close to my house. I bought one long basic black dress and it cost me 5$.
According to my analysis dress from op shop is to outdated style, having limited fabric, and uncomfortable to wear. Opshop dress sometimes did not trendy and maybe people doesn’t like it. so that’s why i will buy the most unliked, uncomfortable, bad looking dress and transform that to something that all people will enjoy wearing. Maybe I can turn the dress to something that people would wear to a fancy restaurant. As a result of making this decision my learning goal will be achievable because my main point is to redesign the dress. How can I continue my learning goal if I did not have the dress.

This is opshops is near my house

This is all my options in my neighborhood and the one that i visited was SALVOS. It was wonderful, the service from the employee was nice and helpful. The store was clean and tidy. I rate it 8/10. I also think that visiting various op shops is helpful for me because I can get tons of clothing options that I want to redesign. I rate 8 out of 10 because it does help my learning goal so I can know which op shop is near my house.

My strategies for my learning goal are:

Choosing my personal learning goal- my learning goal is to buy a dress from opshop and turn it to something better. I choose this because i like to design some clothing from i was in 5 grade. In the Covid era my hobby was digital drawing. Also, since i was little, I have dreamed of becoming a fashion designer.
Finding information about the location of the opshops, fabric, sewing skills and tools- all the information i will search it in google.
Managing time- i will go to the opshop on the weekends after i already finish the design. I will try to be consistent with the AIF work which is every day at least 45 minuets.

The feasibility of my learning goal are I had a hobby of digital drawing. Since I was little, I have skills to draw clothes. With that, I believe that my learning is feasible because I have the expertise to design clothing. There’s also supporting factors for the feasibility of my learning goal such as the opshop is near my house (it only took 5 minuets). I enjoy doing my learning goal i feel like it’s not boring and its fun!. The more i study my learning goal the more ideas i get. It’s also feasible because I was given a sewing machine. After watching this video, I feel like I have expanded my knowledge about sewing and I am more confident than before. This video show that she just bought a 1-dollar dress from a thrift store, and she said that the dress it is too old dated and she want to redesign it. After that researched a dress that she wants, and she started to cut the dress and sew it. The video that I'm watching is related to my learning goal and is the same as what I am going to do, just a different kind of fabric and design. This is one of the videos that related to my learning goal and after this I'm going to find another video that relates to my learning goal. The video is useful because she is doing it step by step and is specific. Maybe I just have to look for another tutorial so that I will gain my knowledge about sewing more. I rate this strategy 6 out of 10. It does help my learning goal to show me basic skill of sewing but this is not my design. That’s why I rate this six.

I needed a sewing machine so I chose to ask one of my teachers who likes to sew. At the same time I asked my homestay.

If i made a decision to only ask Miss Maree about the sewing machine I wouldn’t have the sewing machine because Miss Maree was using the sewing machine for herself, and it would have been a waste of my valuable time. In addition, when I arrived at home, I asked my Homestay if they have a sewing machine. Although they did not have one they said that they have a friend who can lend me a sewing machine. As a result of my decision to ask two people I have progressed my learning goal.

After getting feedback from one of my friends, Damar I decided to add the photo of the dress that I’m going to redesign. All my references are from Pinterest which the social media platform that provides tons of dresses that are up to date and inspired me. Recently, my social media content has been full of Korean-style dresses, so I was inspired to do research on Pinterest about Korean dresses. After seeing all the pictures, I was inspired to make a Korean style dress. Damar's feedback was very useful for me because I got more ideas about my portfolio. Damar's feedback assists me to get more post about collecting information from social media to get references. This strategy is quite useful for me because adding references can make my Padlet more connected. This feedback makes me closer to my learning goals because I can open up my knowledge about the dress I will make and I can put together the design I imagined and what I like based on what I found on the internet.

The op shop that I went to is named Goodbyes. When I went to the store, the atmosphere of the store was kind of quiet, not many people were there. The clothing is kind of expensive, the price is approximately $24-$100. The prices are not really friendly for students. The store provides men and women's clothing. After going to the Goodbyes op shop, I decided to not buy anything in there because it’s too expensive for me. The clothing is quite nice though but it’s too pricey. I believe that another op shop will provide the same things with the cheaper price. After that, I decided to go to the other op shop that is cheaper than the Goodbyes op shop. If I was rating this op shop online 6 out of 10 as an op shop, but for my learning goal I rate this 1 out of 10 because it didn’t help me progress my goal, but it did help eliminate it from my options.

This op shop didn’t provide a lot of things that I wanted. They only provide a small amount of clothing, and the price is quite high. It’s approximately $15-$50 and it’s quite expensive for me because I want to be looking up the dress that have a price is approximately $5 and the quality of the clothing is not quite good. Some of them have a defect on the clothes and the interior of the op shop is kind of bad. Also, when I went in there, there’s no people in there, it is only me and the workers. After going to the store, I decided to go to another Op shop that has better quality and clothing with cheaper prices. And I rate this op shop 3 out of 10 as an Op shop. But for my learning goal, one out of 10 because it didn’t help me progress my learning at all, but it did help me eliminate from my options.

the Opshop that I went to is named, Australian Red Cross. This is the most crowded op shop that I went to. The atmosphere is very noisy. A lot of people trying the clothes. They provided a nice quality of clothing. The price is so friendly and reasonable for all people. They just not selling some clothing, but also, they sell some bags, belts, shoes, and some hats. Or I can say it’s accessories. The price is approximately $3 -$50. This is the best op shop that I went to because the price, atmosphere, store, employee is so friendly. I decided to come back to the store I’m hoping find something good for my design. If I rate this op shop online, I would give 10 out of 10. But if I rate this op shop for my learning, I rate this 8 out of 10 because it helped me find the store that I want, which is the cheapest one the reasonable price and the quality of the clothing I will come to the store again.

After getting feedback from Miss Maree I decided to bring my sewing machine to the school so that miss Maree can teach me how to sew properly. I am choosing to develop my sewing skills by asking miss maree about basic sewing skills. In conclusion, If i made the choice to learn how to sew just by watching youtube videos I will not developing my sewing skills and I would waste my time because of that. After getting feedback from Miss Maree, I gained new knowledge about how to use the sewing machine. I learned how to set the correct tension according to the sewing machine used. The first strategy I used was watching videos on YouTube. This strategy was useless because it didn't have any impact on my work. Finally, I asked Miss Maree, someone who has experience with sewing and she said that the tension was adjusted according to the fabric I used. This strategy was useful because I got an answer from someone who was experienced. After getting an answer from Miss Maree, I did research on the internet regarding tension and fabric. and finally, after much research I decided what tension was best to use in making my dress. After doing what Miss Maree suggested, I adapted the tension that I found based on my research which was supported by Miss Maree's advice.

When I went back to Indonesia I found this cute dress that similar to my design. If I compare it with my design there are several things that look different, even though it has a similar design. The most obvious thing is the fabric. The fabric in the shop is more comfortable to use and softer. That's clear because the budgets spent are also different. The second thing is that there are several stitches that I noticed are quite different from what I imagined in my dress, such as there are pleats on the chest that I didn't do. In terms of price, the total budget I spent was only 5AUD, whereas the price I saw in the shop was 60AUD. That's quite clear because, the store will definitely provide material equivalent to the price. even so, the dress I make can cost 30AUD if I make it well and carefully. The strategy of observing clothes at the mall as a strategy inspired me to make good dresses. As a result, my design proves that a cheap dress can be fancy if you have the intention.

Her experience in making dresses is quite well known in Indonesia, and she often attends important events in dresses that are very fascinating. While making the dress I made so many mistakes, especially in the needle part. Either I broke the tip of the needle or the needle got stuck in the edge of the sewing machine. I ended up breaking 4 needles. Because of that I develop my knowledge on getting used to the machine. Progressed my learning because I had to learn how to adapt to the sewing machine and ended up being able to use the sewing machine even though it had many shortcomings.

While sewing I realized that my dress was too short, I think because I cut it way too short. After that I decided to add the bottom part which is a skirt that was too long for me, and I think I made a good decision. The strategy combining the skirt and made the previous design into a top has significant positive impact on my learning because I’m not quite sure about my previous design and after I changed the design, I adjusted to the due date, and I finished the dress in just one night.

During the dress making process I accidentally broke 4 needles because I was testing if I can combine 2 fabric in one. But, I ended up breaking 4 needles and from Miss Maree perspective’s the needle is just wrong for the fabric. After doing some research the needle that I have to use is the needle which for stretchy materials. This strategy of testing 2 fabrics in sewing machine was quite helpful because I discovered that I have to use a different needle for doing that but. I broke 4 needle so it’s a bit of a waste of money, energy and time because I should have known this from the start. apart from that I managed to achieve my learning goal, namely redesigning a dress from the op shop, even though it was different from what I imagined, the dress was still good.

Strategy asking Miss Maree for help was incredibly impactful regarding to my learning goal because I got the perspective from someone that has an experience of sewing and Miss Maree taught me patiently. Without her help I think I won’t be able to sew with sewing machine. Despite the fact that my sewing was not as good as her but at least I achieve goal of being able to sew using sewing machine even though the result are not perfect.

The strategy of targeting people of different

ages was wonderful because I get such a good feedback form many people. Getting feedback from Jonathan, which is from the perspective of someone that is in my age was

surprisingly fantastic because I never thought that a guy can be extremely specific about fashion. After getting perspective from Jonathan, I decided to pay attention in the detail and

learn more about trendy clothes. In comparison getting perspective from Sarah another person my age turned out to be ineffective because they provided brief comments such

as "it looks nice", which made this a questionable strategy. As I expected, Vanni's point of view was the most impressive feedback for me because I got the perspective from

someone who really cares about fashion. After getting feedback from Vanni I decided to study about the fabric that I should use for making my dress more fashionable.

Getting the perspective of dress maker and expert who presenting in youtube video was really useful because I got the same technique from both perspectives which is pinning the dress before sewing it. This helped me to get basic knowledge of sewing and also make the fabric stay still while sewing the dress.

I approached my friends, teachers, homestay to get feedback on where to get a sewing machine. Based on their feedback to get sewing machine, I considered to buy a sewing machine in k-mart or online store, borrow from someone that possibly has a sewing machine. However, I find it hard and time consuming to do those decisions. Therefore, I decided to ask people in my surroundings which is my homestay, homestay relatives. Surprisingly my homestay has a relatives that is a tailor. But due to urgent situation, my homestay relative was not able to lend me a sewing machine. In the end, instead of asking more of my homestay relatives which might be a hassle, my homestay mother ended up buying me a new sewing machine. This was a really helpful because I ended up not spending money and not wasted my valuable time to progress my learning goal.
