I'd like to thank Nives and the OMS team for being so quick to respond, generous with their time, and incredibly helpful and supportive! I wish I had known about OMS sooner! By the time OMS was recommended to me I had already submitted ~8 fellowship applications. If there is one thing I've learned during this process it's to always reach out to available resources and ask for help. There's no reason to go it alone. Even if it's just getting another set of eyes to read over what you've done. It's great to get different perspectives. Having a trained team of professionals helping, and offering help across all stages of the process (writing, interviewing, etc.) is incredible.

During my Goldwater Scholarship application process with the OMS, I feel like I learned the most about how to be concise and effective in my writing while still being authentic. The writing process was actually very transformative as well because I learned so much about myself and my academic and career goals. I highly recommend that future applicants take advantage of the OMS's resources by working closely with their team and being open to any and all feedback or constructive criticism. It was an excellent learning process, regardless of the outcome!
- Katelyn Amero

I would like to begin by thanking Nives and everyone in the OMS department for all the guidance and feedback they provided me to help make my application competitive. During my application process, I certainly felt as though my organizational and time management skills improved and I learned techniques on making my writing much more impactful and concise. My biggest piece of advice during an application process would be to breakdown each part and devote your focus to one section at a time to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Nives helped me with this by organizing check-in meetings to discuss one part of the application at a time. During my application process, it was comforting to know that the OMS team was there to support me and build my confidence.
- Erica Desjardins

The support that Nives and Katrina offered throughout this application process allowed me to feel comfortable exploring many different methodologies and helped me connect to what felt the most genuine. I feel as if my revision and communication skills were increased significantly. Looking forward to other opportunities, academic or personal, I have a great foundation to help build on both my strengths and weaknesses. Overall the OMS was a major factor in what I consider to be a strong and hopefully successful application, and I thank them!

-Olivia Dougherty

Overall, Nives and Katrina provided me excellent support across the whole application process and encouraged me to not only seek out help from other departments but to take part in various different opportunities around the community. Because of their guidance, I feel better prepared not only to tackle more applications this upcoming year, but I am engaging in various extracurricular activities around Bangor and UMaine I would've never pursued had I not applied. These experiences are invaluable both at the community level and the individual level. They have made me a much better and well-rounded applicant and professional. My biggest piece of advice is to take advantage of the application process and seek out opportunities related to your goal. Even if you application is not chosen, if you've made the most of the application process, you've still come one step closer to finding something that you will be chosen for. It takes lots of courage to "hit submit," but once you get over that initial mental block, you may find yourself "hitting submit" to a million different opportunities.

I have applied for the doctoral AAUW-IF for the past three years without success. Usually, I work on the application by myself and send it to my mentors for proofreading.
This year I decided to apply again only if I find some professional help through the application process. I emailed the ORD, and Danielle directed Nives and the OMS office as the right place to help me. Nives took her time to enquire about this grant and reach out to several people. Since no one has ever received this award, AAUW-IF grant, within Penobscot County, she consulted with other schools outside the state where students had received this award. Her help and encouragement gave me hope to apply again. Nives and Katrina gave me step-by-step constructive feedbacks that helped me all through the application process. I am optimistic about getting the result of the award by the end of this week and grateful for the immense guidance from OMS team.

-Tolu Esther Alaba
