Sleep is arguably the most important factor for success in college. It can affect every aspect of your life. I personally struggle with not getting enough restful sleep, and I know many others who have the same problem. I hope to shed some light about the fact that many college students don't get the proper amount of sleep.

Doing nothing could be better than studying. Why sleeping is so important.

Sleeping effects every aspect of your life. Without proper amounts of sleep, you won't be able to function nearly as effectively as you would if you had a good night's sleep. Sleep gives the entire body rest. Sleep has both mental and physical aspects. Sleep helps rest and repair the body, by allowing muscles time to repair themselves and relax, strengthening the immune system, and sharpening your senses. Sleep also has a major role for your brain. While you are sleeping, your brain goes through many different cycles. These cycles have many different positive effects, but the main effects that affect college students are ones that can affect their GPA. Sleep allows your brain to review and practice information learned the previous day, as well as move it into long-term storage. This process is so effective that it has been shown that students who get a full night's sleep often perform better on tests than students who stayed up all night studying.

This article does an excellent job in recognizing the issues that college students face. It acknowledges that students would like to get a proper amount of sleep, but struggle to find the time. If college students could find a way to prioritize sleep in their routine, they could have a better college experience overall.

According to healthresearchfunding.org, only 11% of students report feeling like they get a sufficient amount of rest. While 73% of students report problems with their sleeping habits.

This is important because of the extremely large number of students that are effected. If more students got a sufficient amount of sleep each night, there is a much better chance of more students being able to properly manage their emotions, have better understanding of the subjects that they are studying, and an overall increase in general wellness.

Sleep has a strong effect on mental health.

The main take away from this video is that sleep could play a much larger role in mental health than previously thought. Many students who do not get enough sleep can develop symptoms of anxiety and depression. Chronic sleep deprivation also can make the symptoms of preexisting mental conditions much stronger than they normally are. Simply getting enough sleep can greatly reduce the amount of mental problems that college students suffer from on a daily basis.

The wild cycle of sleep.

When we sleep, our body goes through a repeating cycle of 4 stages- each of which has a different effect on the body.

Stage 1 is the transitional period of being awake and being asleep, and it typically lasts about 10 minutes. This is where you begin to relax mentally.

Stage 2 allows your heart rate to slow down, and allows your body temperature to drop. Your brain produces sleep spindles during this phase of sleep as well. Sleep spindles help memory, neural development, and to reinforce your circadian rhythm.

Stage 3 is when the deepest, most restful sleep occurs. During this stage your muscles begin to relax, and your blood pressure and respiratory rate decreases. This stage of sleep is also when tissue repair and growth, and immune strengthening occurs.

Stage 4 (REM) sleep is when your eyes begin to rapidly move while you sleep. This phase of sleep is when your dreams become the most vivid. This stage of sleep is when your brain focuses on applying information learned, and moving it to long term memory.
