Stage One: Trust Vs. Mistrust

Stage one in Erikson's developmental theory is the first stepping stone into how children grow and learn through life. It is such an important part of youth knowing you can trust adults and other figures in your life. My mom and older sisters were always there for me. They cuddled me and tended to my needs. My father wasn't present or caring in these ways so my mom and sisters carried me through this stage in ways he didn't. I learned to depend on them and grow comfort in their presence. In our textbook it states, "People need to trust the world and the people in it, but they also need to learn some mistrust to protect themselves.." The resolution for me was even though I was growing a mistrust in my father, I was developing a stronger and larger trust in my mom and sisters. I still had those who loved me and showed that.

Stage Two: Autonomy Vs. Shame/Doubt

Stage two in Erikson's developmental theory is found when we are in our toddler age range. This time in our childhood is pivotal to our development, because we start to learn and pick up so much. While we are still dependent children, we start to grow a sense of independence in ways through tasks and day to day life. With my sisters being such a larger part of my childhood due to my mom working multiple jobs to care for us, they would spend time with me teaching me thing like how to write my own name and how to help fold laundry. Though my folding skills probably needed fixed and my name was easier to read when you squinted and tilted your head to the side a little, these things gave me a start on independence and showed me how I could contribute to myself in ways I hadn't before. Our textbook looks at this stage as a time where, "children achieve a balance between self-determination and control by others." The resolution here is that I was accepting to learning from my elders, while still being able to provide my own sense of skill in ways.

Stage Three: Initiative Vs. Guilt

Stage three in Erikson's developmental theory is a large step in a foundation of feelings we are starting to acknowledge and recognize. In this stage children are able to identify feelings about themselves and these feelings can be confusing and conflicting at times. In this stage I found myself in the middle of a lot of big changes and transitions like my parents separating, meeting my now stepdad, and moving to a different state. I had a lot of complex emotions that it was hard to sort out. I felt guilt for welcoming a new father figure into my life and confusion towards the new dynamic that was my family. I started to take initiative for what I was feeling. In our text book it says, "The need to deal with conflicting feelings about the self is at the heart of the third stage of psychosocial development.." and this couldn't be more true. The resolution here was me starting to work out these emotions I was feeling I was learning healthy ways in which to deal with later feelings that would arise.

Stage Four: Industry Vs. Inferiority

Stage four of Erikson's developmental theory is when children start to establish a sense of self. This happens through self confidence and on the other side of this self inferiority. When children feel successful and competent in areas they can identify a sense of pride. When they feel they fall short or are incompetent they tend to feel inferior. In this stage I remember feeling contentment in who I was socially with friends, classmates, and others, yet felt like I was inferior in ways that I had no control over. Events like father-daughter dances left me feeling inferior to my friends that didn't have to think twice about who was going to attend with them. In our textbook it states, "If children are unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self-esteem, they may develop a feeling of low self-worth.." This was what I was feeling at the time. My self esteem seemed to flourish in some areas and completely lack in others. The resolution to this for me was that in times where I felt confused or inferior I was led to look into who I was as a person and was content and comfortable with that.

Stage Six: Intimacy Vs. Isolation

Stage six of Erikson's development theory explores the relationships we form with others and introduces the intimacy we may find within those relationships. Creating bonds and healthy relationships with those you surround yourself in life is so important, because they are a reflection of ourselves. I have relationships with family members and friends that mean the world to me, but I get fearful when entering intimate relationships in fear of them failing after opening up and being vulnerable. The textbook gives a closer look by saying, "...women define themselves through marriage and motherhood." Though I've never experienced either of those things I can understand how being in those positions would create definition in those areas. The resolution here is that I am creating healthy relationships that could model ones in the future I would enjoy and find comfort in.

Stage Five: Identity Vs. Confusion

Stage five of Erikson's developmental theory is found within young adulthood. This is when we grow our self identity and experiment and discover different roles. We seek out our place in the world. I struggled in this stage, because even though I had a good sense of who I was, I had a foggy vision on who I would become. The textbook states we must figure out this identity vs. confusion stage, "...in order to become a unique adult with a coherent sense of self and a valued role in society." This proved true to me, because once I was able to break down those feelings and address them I got a better contentment in who I was and who I was growing into. The resolution here was me digging deep into what I am passionate about and this led to being able to decode emotions and self identity struggles.

Stage Seven: Generativity Vs. Stagnation

Stage seven of Erikson's developmental theory dips into the feelings and growth of contributing to society. This can come through your career, your family you've created, and how you've lead the life you have. Stagnation can occur when one feels stuck like they aren't progressing. The textbook states, "...contribute to society and the raising of future generations.." I think this stage will be fulfilling in so many ways for me. Getting to provide students with a safe place to learn and grow is something I look forward to. Being a passionate educator is a great way to master generativity for one's self. The resolution here will be to make sure I'm always progressing and not finding a point to be stagnant in. In teaching there's always opportunities for teachers alongside the students to learn as well, so being open to that will be important in my future and in this stage.

Stage Eight: Integrity Vs. Despair

Stage eight of Erikson's developmental theory is the last stage. Individuals who have effectively gone through the prior seven stages will often feel like their life is meaningful. This will lead to satisfaction when assessing one's life up to that point. On the other hand of those feelings there could be feelings of regret and despair when looking back at your life prior. That is why the importance of going through every stage before this one effectively is great. Our textbook states, "Involves reflecting on the past.." For me, I think being a successful educator will have me on the right side of this stage. There's no feeling like knowing you made a positive impact, and as an educator you get a career full of that feelings if you are dedicated to the success and growth of your students. Getting to look back and know you showed up for the students everyday and poured passion into your career would be satisfactory in any regard.
