Beyond the trifecta of teacher, board, and books, school museums represent one of the earliest evolutions of the concept of educational technology. School museums were essentially traveling displays and exhibits which were used to enhance student learning. Being heavily focused on visual/3d representations of concepts these were seen as a relatively strong tool to be used in conjunction with teachers/traditional learning.

In the early 1920s film and radio were first theorized to have possible educational applications, as they could both be used to disseminate information quickly. While neither technology really caught on as early as was hoped, they acted as a sort of "proof of concept" which would pave the way for future implementations of these technologies, as well as their combination in the form of television.

Advent of Widespread Film and Television

The start of World War Two was highly influential in the realm of EdTech for two reasons. It highlighted the need for rapid mass education/training, and it lead to the development of many technologies which would help facilitate that. Film was used to train workers and soldiers at rapid rates, and these same techniques would eventually be applied to students as well. Radio also saw comparable developments. Following the war, television would begin to take off, with many government funded programs dedicated to educational topics. Despite these developments however, usage of film, radio and TV would remain limited in classrooms specifically for a number of reasons.

Growth and Expansion of Computers

While computers had existed in some form since the 1950s, they did not become feasible for educational uses until the 1980s, with the invention of the micro-computer, as computers were made somewhat cheaper and far more convenient for the consumer. There was a great deal of interest generated surrounding computers, but there was a few things which hindered their usefulness. Initial programs such as CAI were lacking and didn't see much use, and then further into the 90s they weren't implimented in a particularly productive way, being primarily used as drill/practice machines instead of tools with which to further investigation and learning.

Since the 80s and 90s computers have seen an extreme amount of growth and change, with many school districts issuing laptops at a 1:1 rate to facilitate online/hybrid learning. The enthusiasm for these practices is extremely high, with many touting the benefits of online learning, but the long-term effects and staying power of these technologies remains to be seen. While the internet has undoubtedly been a boon for post-secondary education it is hard to ascertain the impact on younger students and if there are any unforeseen consequences. One thing is certain though, and that is that more so than ever education is becoming more and more available as a result of technological expansion.
