This quote comes from one of the citizens of Hawaii who is for the ban on GMOs. For those on the island who are against GMOs they believe that Hawaii could set an example for the world and show that when people are against a product the company will have to adapt to the preferences of the consumers to stay competitive. After long debates with farmers and scientists Hawaii did end up banning GMOs on their island with the exception of the Rainbow Papaya. The Scientific American states that Hawaii’s ban on GMOs is invalid and driven by fear (Boyd, 2008).

Here an Australian expert is commenting on what genetic modification is and how common it is in almost all biological practices. The expert states that selective breeding has been going on since the beginning of time whether it be with dogs and breeding for certain traits like coat and build or for plants for the ones that are most successful. A Nature Journal reports that selective breeding is an important practice when dealing with livestock. A study done with sheep to selectively breed for sheep that are more resistant to infection has helped farmers hold on to more of their sheep and reduce costs (Houston, 2003).

Those against GMOs claim that the emergence of new seeds creates new foods that the human body is not used to and could create new allergies or negative effects on the body. The movie later went on to state that there was in fact no scientific evidence to back up these claims. The Institute for Responsible Technology is in the part of the population that does believe that GMOs could be a source of America’s rising allergies. In the article it is stated that since 1996 GM seeds have been injected with bacteria, virus and other genes have been artificially inserted to the DNA of soy, corn, cottonseed and canola plants, and these modifications could lead to allergic reactions (Boyles, 2007).

“The gap in viewpoint on GMOs between the public and the scientific community is the largest gap on any politicized scientific topic.”

This quote shows that a lot of controversy over GMOs comes from consumers who blindly believe that GMOs are unsafe or unhealthy are driven by the fear that these technologically advanced seeds are harmful. Even though GMOs have been scientifically proven to be safe for consumption and the environment many people still oppose them, this includes the entire European Union that has all GM products banned. The Electronic Journal of Biotechnology states that so many people have opposition to GMOs partly because of the attention the issue has gotten in the media. If this issue hadn’t gotten so much attention it is speculated that consumers would not even know the difference or know that GMOs are in their food (Bonny, 2003).

Many people still argue that GMOs are unsafe but, science says otherwise. In the case of Hawaii banning GMOs on the basis that they are unsafe for people and the environment it seemed when making this decision they forgot about the GM Rainbow Papaya that saved the papaya industry on the island. The Scientific American states that people are still wary about GMOs because since they are relatively new it is hard to determine the long-term effects and those who are against GMOs feel as though we are the guinea pig generation for this new technology (Blanche, 2015).
